Program areas at Friends of Tulare County
LISTOS California provides Self-Help Enterprises (SHE) with a grant to administer a COVID-19 outreach campaign throughout Tulare County. SHE has partnered with the Friends of Tulare County 501(3)(c) to manage and monitor Public Service Announcements (PSA) with community partners. The PSAs are delivered in multiple languages for a variety of demographics on a variety of media platforms. The PSAs have evolved with updated guidelines from CDC and Tulare County Public Health. The PSAs have run on pre-identified radio and television stations that target Tulare County from May through September. These PSAs include radio voiceovers, interviews, and 30-second television commercials. Second is the Listos CV19 Youth Media Challenge. This contest is encouraging multi-languages from a variety of demographics for youth in grades 7-12. Original artwork is being asked in three mediums: audio, graphic design, and video. Third is an English/Spanish 20-page print publication with California News & Review (10 pages in English/10 pages in Spanish). The targeted topics include mental health, suicide, homelessness, substance use, foster care, child abuse, domestic violence, and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES).
The Tulare County Children's Welfare Services Toy Drive is conducted every December and it provides gifts to Tulare County children in need, particularly those children within the Child Welfare System (CWS) more commonly known as Child Protective Services. Unfortunately, many of these children are in the CWS system due to child abuse or neglect, but in all cases these children undergo the trauma of disruption to their family. This program collects toys to give as gifts to the nearly 1,700 previously abused or neglected children within the Tulare County Welfare System.
The Tulare County Animal Shelter focuses on good adoptions. As our mission statement indicates: "We are committed to reducing animal overpopulation by promoting adoptions, advocating for the welfare of animals by operating spay/neuter and humane education programs, encouraging responsible pet ownership and demonstrating respect for all living things." With this in mind, the shelter staff and volunteers advocate for good placement of our animals. A new modular building was purchased this year for HHSA Animal Services to house the Spay/Neuter Clinic. The new modular building will provide much needed spay/neuter services to the community as well as spay/neuter and medical procedures for shelter animals. It will also act as a veterinary clinic that will provide low cost vaccinations, micro chipping, and basic preventative services for community pets.
