Classroom & Afterschool ProgramsConducted throughout the school year, serving 50 students and including 14 fieldtrips and 1 townhall presentation. The Organization's Climate Justice Leadership Development Program was taught to over 50 BIPOC students at a Title 1 middle school during the 2022-2023 school year. Grounded in ethnic studies, students learned about the origins of environmental pollution, its distinct locations in lower-income neighborhoods, and how to advocate and build for a more equitable tomorrow. Students were engaged through their stories and histories to pull from their ancestral knowledge and strength as they began to engage in the continued struggle of living in proper relationship with the earth. The young leaders learned about the widespread impact of air pollution and soil contamination in their community through the collection of data from conducting their own community science projects to bring attention to the impact of environmental pollution and climate change within their frontline community. They presented their findings to Oakland City Council Members at a student-led community townhall and have met with individual Council Members to share their ideas and solutions for cleaning up their community.
