Program areas at Georgetown International Relations Association Incorporated
The North American Invitational Model United Nations (NAIMUN) is a Model United Nations conference for high school students which takes place annually in February. February 2023 marked the 60th iteration of the conference. NAIMUN draws roughly 3000 high school students from around the country and world to participate in 40 committees, each designed to enhance students' understanding of a given international affairs topic. Some committees simulate actual organs of the United Nations, while others focus on smaller governing bodies or corporate boards across a wide array of historical timelines. Each of these simulations provides its participants with a chance to enhance their research, public speaking, and critical thinking skills as they work in pursuit of a common problem. NAIMUN is staffed by roughly 250 Georgetown University student volunteers.
The GIRA Global program oversees a series of partnerships with foreign universities and organizations to facilitate Model UN conferences around the world. Some of these endeavors involve sending Georgetown University staff volunteers to staff other institutions' Model UN conferences while others involve GIRA staff working directly with other universities to develop new Model UN programs. GIRA receives a portion of the revenue from the programs it is involved in facilitating and at times receives a licensing fee from its partners as well as covered expenses.
The National Collegiate Security Conference (NCSC) is a Model United Nations conference for college students which takes place in October annually. October 2022 marked the 50th iteration of the conference. NCSC draws around 600 students from around the country and world to participate in roughly 20 simulations of modern, security-focused dilemmas or crises. NCSC is staffed by Georgetown University student volunteers, who also gain the opportunity to engage substantively with the material and enhance their skills in public speaking, research, organization, and leadership.
GIRA Local is a program that hosts a Model UN conference and IR-related programming for middle school students in the DC region.
This section includes funding for Georgetown's competitive Model UN team, helping to develop knowledge of international relations and global affairs as well as public speaking and leadership skills for college students.
