Program areas at Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights
COMMUNITY ORGANIZING & LEADERSHIP TRAINING: During 2023, GLAHR organized 26 weekly hybrid meetings where members gathered to learn and discuss policies, and/or issues related to the immigrant communities with an average of 30-40 people each time from the Atlanta area and other parts of the state; In continuation with GLAHR's yearly tradition, GLAHR held its 13rd Asamblea Popular in Blue Ridge, GA. Deciding to change locations was no easy choice but was essential due to the drastic laws implemented in the state of Florida. GLAHR decided to stand in solidarity with the immigrant community and switch venues. During which more than 220 individuals joined us. We held a three day leadership training with 35 workshops for adults, youth, teens, and children; GLAHR joined a week of leadership training at the Mijente Institute for Political Education and Sazonblea with 40 volunteers and staff in Tucson, AZ.
COALITION BUILDING: GLAHR supported the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT) in 6 rallies against companies who have mistreated, ignored and uncompensated their workers. In continuance with the Levantemonos Juntos coalition GLAHR has met with IUPAT 19 times to organize events, calls to action, and updates on Deferred action cases for workers on deportation proceedings.
CIVIC ENGAGEMENT: GLAHR continued its efforts to get the Latino community out to vote by continuing with its previous La Gente Vota campaign; Beginning in February in Clayton County GLAHR's 12 volunteers were able to reach 260 households on the first day of canvassing. By March 21st, the day of the election GLAHR was able to knock on 5,244 doors. In April we surpassed that number and reached 6,478 doors in Jonesboro, Forest Park, Lovejoy, Lake City, Lumpkin, Morrow, Riverdale and part of College Park.Our volunteers attended 28 educational trainings and 6 preparation calls; In ongoing efforts in South Georgia and to make sure the Latino community is able to exercise their right to vote, GLAHR was able to continue with the Election Defenders in Tiff County, consisting of 12 volunteers dispersed throughout 25 polling locations.
