Program areas at Get Inspired
Abalone restoration project - We conducted 25 abalone surveys with 22 community volunteers. We had 7 schools growing abalone including 885 students . We presented our programs to 335 people in the community including civic and hobby groups. We partnered with the Ocean Institute to create public outreach reaching 10,000 people and also partnered on research projects. We recently submitted a joint petition with other Orange County NGOs to change the regulations in our local Marine Protected Areas to allow for easier permitting for research, monitoring, education, and restoration. We have begun surveying tidepools with high urchin density to watch for a "spillover effect" in adjacent kelp forests.
Aquaponics programs- We have six aquaponics systems in schools in Orange County providing learning for 275 students in their classrooms. Rooftop aquaponics system at Santa Monica High School is still being constructed and is running with the inclusion of the Team marine students from their environmental science class.
White Seabass restocking Project - We taught 230 students (6th grade through college level) how to grow white seabass in their classrooms. We released the 285 seabass from classrooms into the Pacific Ocean In June and December to restock the wild populations. We worked in these classrooms throughout the school year teaching ocean chemistry, aquaculture and fish pathology. We also started up a cord grass restoration project using nitrate rich wastewater from a middle school white seabass system.
Pismo clam restoration project- We had another successful spawn of pismo clams! This is only the 2nd time in history that it has been done (both by us). We surveyed 18 sites in Orange County with more than 250 volunteers from the community, to continue our effort to census the clams left on our beaches. We presented these findings at the California Estuarine Research Society conference. We are working with 2 interns to study the effects of sand movement on the clams during the El nino year.
