Campaign to STOP GE Trees - Following the release of the draft Environmental Impact Statement (dEIS) produced by the USDA that recommend approval of a petition to deregulate a GE American chestnut, GJEP got the comment period extended by 30 days. We succeeded in mobilizing more than 4,000 comments to the USDA opposing the petition for deregulation. Our grassroots and alternative media outreach successfully raised the profile of the GE chestnut and its risks to forests, communities and biodiversity among a broad audience. In response to the emerging threats from GE trees GJEP and the Campaign to successfully raised the profile of the work beyond our existing networks, including collaborating on a report on the status of GE tree research and development, which was completed in late summer 2022.
Biofuelwatch - Biofuelwatch continues to monitor scientific research underway with the intent of engineering trees for use in producing biofuels (cellulosic ethanol primarily). We have been working in Vermont and New England to push back against climate policies for heating and power that would incentivize burning biomass and biodiesel (from soya and corn oils primarily). We have also raised concerns about advances that have been made in commercial level production of bio-oil using gasification processes. As the California Low Carbon Fuel Standard has come under more scrutiny Biofuelwatch has submitted comments and provided testimony to the California Air Resources Board articulating the imperative of moving beyond bioenergy. Biofuelwatch researched and published a ground breaking report Carbon Capture or Captured Futures? Fossil Fuel and Bioenergy Controls Californias Getting to Neutral Climate Policy.
Global Justice Media Program - We produced 26 Earth Minutes and 18 Earth Watch interviews with front line speakers, Indigenous Peoples, activists and authors on Sojourner Truth show on Pacifica Radio in Los Angeles; We launched a new website LangellePhoto.org to highlighting historical milestones; and our New Voices Speakers Bureau facilitated 24 contacts between our speakers and the media. Our Breaking Green podcast produced 12 episodes focused on false solutions to climate and biodiversity crises that were downloaded over 2,500 times.
