Program areas at Global Pearls
The program in morocco provides vocational training in food industry skills for impoverished families and put in a well for a village whose well had run dry. This year, as a result of the earthquake, there was also a large relief program to help 27 villages nearest the epicenter of the quake. This included providing immediate food relief, helping over 400 children relocate to boarding schools, and working to help communities rebuild their lives.
Child rape has escalated dramatically in western cameroon, so we ran four child-rape-prevention camps that taught 200 children how to avoid dangerous situations, protect themselves when threatened, and contend with the aftermath of rape. 10 girls-against-rape clubs were set up in local schools and were attended by over 1000 young girls. We also held 18 workshops for 900 mothers to teach them how to protect their children, ran a conference for adult survivors of rape, and funded 4 projects designed and run by participants to combat rape in their communities. We also initiated a new program to train first responders, like the police, in how to properly manage child rape cases.
In cameroon, we continued to fund an elementary school that serves orphaned and displaced children, including daily meals, a dance program for psychosocial healing, and a computer literacy program. We finished the construction of a secondary school to serve the same children and equipped it with half the training equipment required. This year we added a health program to treat intestinal worms and other common ailments.
