Program areas at Go for Broke National Educational Center
Exhibits: 1) located in los angeles' historic little tokyo district, the "defining courage" exhibit provides a hands-on, interactive experience which explores the concept of courage through the lives of young japanese americans of wwii, and asks modern visitors to act with similar courage in their own lives. 2) the "courage & compassion: the shared japanese american wwii experience" traveling exhibit has partnered with 14 communities across the u.s. The exhibit chronicles the stories of japanese americans during and immediately after wwiii, and highlights the bravery and extraordinary support of japanese americans during that turbulent time. 3) Go for Broke National education Center maintains the Go for Broke monument, a striking granite dedication to honor the 33,000 japanese american men and women who served during wwii.
Outreach: Go for Broke National education Center welcomes thousands of multigenerational, National and international visitors annually to its exhibits, the Go for Broke monument and also through its online presence on youtube and podcasts. Throughout the year, the organization offers guided tours with school and community groups, college internships and community based activities.
Education: well-regarded for its authentic information and documentation, Go for Broke National education Center provides a diverse array of programs related to the preservation and sharing of the legacy of the japanese american soldiers of wwii. Programming includes its unparalleled hanashi oral history & special collections, in-depth curriculum and detailed historical content on its website and social media platforms. Currently, the National torchbearer program which engages with young adults nationwide, and the Go for Broke journalism institute which offers professional mentorship to lausd high school students, offers unique opportunities to connect with younger, multicultural audiences locally and nationally.
Store: Go for Broke National education Center offers logo merchandise, including clothing, backpacks, and mugs. Also available are books, dvds, infant and toddler clothing, and artwork memorializing and celebrating japanese american history and culture. In 2019, the "called to serve" hello kitty plush was created in collaboration with sanrio to honor the legacy of japanese american women who served in the u.s. women's army corps during world war ii.
