Program areas at Golden Valley Community Foundation
International day at the Golden Valley farmers market/fundraiser for the ukraine. International day is an annual event held in in coordination with the Golden Valley farmers market. The goal of the event is to celebrate the diversity of the Community and to acknowledge foreign-born immigrants to the Community. In 2022, funds were collected to send to the ukraine. Funds that were raised through a silent auction and outright donations were sent to global synergy group for distribution to humanitarian relief in the ukraine. Entertainment is provided by musical groups that feature world music and activities, like chinese lion dancers. Children's activities are provided at the event and this year there was a focus on books for children that celebrate diversity. Books are shared through a little free library that was set-up in one of the city parks.
Social impact advocacy fund - in 2021 some donors requested that the gv Community Foundation establish a fund to donate to organizations that have a social well- being component to their charters. In 2022, the gv Community Foundation made gifts to 21 organizations that have a mission to promote well-being in the Community. Some of the organizations that received gifts from the gv Community Foundation were prism (people responding in social ministry), the local food shelf; st. joan of arc church - peace & justice fund; hopkins westwind Community band; groves learning center; homes for our troops; and rebuilding together, twin cities.
Small sparks grants 2022 - this program funds small initiatives in the Community. Individuals, clubs, educators, and organizations can apply for grants up to $1,000 per event planned. In 2022, through this program, the gv Community Foundation funded bi-weekly yoga at the gv farmers market; a music series at senior residences within the city; and scholarships for children enrolled in the ymca's early childhood learning center, located in a neighboring city, but which serves Golden Valley residents.
In 2022, the Golden Valley Community Foundation held a sustainability event at the Golden Valley farmers market. Organizations were invited to attend and talk to guests of the farmers market about sustainability. Member of the Community who own hybrid or electric vehicles were invited to bring their vehicles and talk with guests about their vehicles and their experience owning a hybrid or ev. Other organizations that were invited to attend were the city of Golden Valley, the local watershed district, the local solid waste hauler and recycling service provider, the local utility company, a local home furnishing retailer, who focuses on sustainable home furnishings and other organizations. This was the first time this event has been held since the covid-19 health emergency. Expenses incurred by this project were $2,354.92. Expenses consisted mainly for advertising, event signage and purchase of reuseable tote bags to hand out to guests.
