Program areas at GHI

The primary exempt purpose of ghi is achieved through the provision of a continuum of care and service for older adults at two continuing care retirement communities (ccrcs) -- Goodwin House alexandria in alexandria, Virginia, and Goodwin House bailey's crossroads in falls church, Virginia. A continuing care retirement community provides life-long care in a continuum of housing, services, and health care to older adults. In fiscal year 2023, ghi served more than 1,794 older adults ranging from 55 to 105 years of age. (see schedule o)the ccrc continuum is provided at Goodwin House alexandria and Goodwin House bailey's crossroads through residential Living (593 apartments), assisted Living (94 apartments), memory support households for residents with dementia and alzheimer's disease (26 dwellings), and nursing and rehabilitative care (149 person capacity). Construction of a five-story health care center was completed in early june 2017. Goodwin House alexandria's existing skilled nursing and memory care components were relocated into the new facility with all private rooms operating in a small House model. In fiscal year 2018, ghi completed building improvements with the addition of 12 new independent Living units in february of 2018 and 11 new assisted Living units in june of 2018.the ccrc continuum is also provided to older persons Living in their own homes outside of Goodwin House ccrcs by a new program launched by ghi in october 2014 called Goodwin House at home. The purpose of Goodwin House at home is to honor the choice of older adults to remain in their own homes, while providing support for them to age in the place and way they choose. At the close of fiscal year 2023, Goodwin House at home had 228 members.ghi celebrated its 68th anniversary as a non-profit corporation in fiscal year 2023. Goodwin House alexandria has been in service to older adults for 56 years and Goodwin House bailey's crossroads for 36 years. Ghi and its subsidiary corporations are each governed by a volunteer, community-based board of trustees or board of directors.goodwin House home care provides companion and Living support services tailored to meet resident needs. Elder care management, personal care, laundry, personal escorts to appointments, companion services, shopping, and socialization are some of the services from the Goodwin House home care team. Approximately 123,669 hours of service were provided in fiscal year 2023 by 50 full-time and 9 part-time certified nursing assistants. Goodwin House palliative care and hospice provides compassionate and palliative care to residents and emotional support to their families, with a mission of assuring that death occurs pain-free and with dignity, and that the families of hospice residents are supported during and after the death of their loved ones. Goodwin House palliative care and hospice provided 45,955 hospice service days to 622 residents in fiscal year 2023. Goodwin House palliative care and hospice has provided hospice service to 3,022 residents in 25 years of service. Goodwin House community services: ghi serves an additional 185 older adults through Goodwin House community services, a subsidiary corporation which provides management services to a sister non-profit corporation that provides housing to low and moderate income seniors in northern Virginia. Ghi provides support to the management team and board in the areas of financial oversight, bookkeeping and payroll, financial reporting, resident services, human resource management, facility management, and strategic planning. Ghi extends its charitable purpose through its nationally accredited clinical pastoral education program, which in 26 years has trained more than 370 students from across the u.s. and overseas in pastoral care with older adults, and serves as a training program for students from a variety of regional theological seminaries. Ghi is one of a small number of continuing care retirement communities to offer a fully accredited clinical pastoral education program and further, to link that program with its Goodwin House hospice program.
