Description
The Green Building Initiative (GBI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerate the adoption of building practices that result in resource efficient, healthier and environmentally sustainable buildings. We advance this mission through credible and practical green building approaches for more sustainable communities. Our strategy for accomplishing our goals takes two parallel avenues: the Green Globes building rating system for private commercial buildings, and the Guiding Principle Compliance – a program tailored to federal building sustainability requirements.

Program areas at GBI

GBI educates its community on green building practices through programs that encourage sustainable, healthy, and resilient features and operational practices in commercial and multifamily buildings.Additionally, GBI supports federal high performance building requirements through custom assessment programs, such as the Guiding Principles Compliance programs for new construction and existing buildings. Through its Green Globes Journey to Net Zero program, GBI provides building owners with a transparent process to evaluate renewable energy strategies and their impact on energy and carbon emission reduction strategies toward the goal of reaching net zero. See Schedule O.To help promote and enhance green building education and the adoption of best practices, GBI has created the following credentialing programs: Green Globes Emerging Professional (GGEP), Green Globes Professional (GGP), Green Globes Fellow (GGF), Green Globes Assessor (GGA), Guiding Principles Compliance Professional (GPCP), and Guiding Principles Compliance Fellow (GPCF).GBI is a thought leader on sustainability, health and wellness, resilience, ESG, and Net Zero objectives related to buildings. As such, GBI partners and collaborates with NGOs, government, corporations, and allied organizations in the pursuit of global environmental objectives.GBI's Board of Directors strives to promote transparency in its governance practices as it does in the development of its rating systems, where GBI follows ANSI-approved procedures for consensus, balance, openness, and due process.
