Outreach & education & actions - Greenpeace, Inc. Volunteers and staff mobilized climate organizations across the movement and engaged the broader public to join picket lines in support of striking auto workers represented by the united auto workers (uaw) union. We influenced the media narrative and led thousands of climate activists to show solidarity with the auto workers who won historic contracts, including gains for workers in new electric vehicle manufacturing that will support a just transition away from fossil fuels. Greenpeace, Inc. and fire drill fridays, our partnership program with jane fonda, reached over 3.5 million views, with monthly livestream shows on a wide range of environmental topics and online shorts. We held a collective action training series with volunteers from across the country, deepening their organizing skills and culminating in 30 supporter-led earth day events. We educated hundreds of supporters on critical issues related to protecting our democracy and the danger of slapp lawsuits through virtual town halls and volunteer calls with protect the protest coalition partners.
Oceans - Greenpeace, Inc. is campaigning for sustainable fisheries and seafood, ocean sanctuaries (marine reserves), and phasing out single-use plastics that are polluting our bodies, land, and oceans. Our campaign leverages the power of large seafood buyers, seafood producers, and governments to improve fisheries management; reduces the amount of plastic pollution entering the ocean; defends seafood workers' rights, and seeks to establish a network of international ocean sanctuaries. 2023 Greenpeace, Inc. Ocean campaign highlights include: * Greenpeace, Inc. and our allies achieved a significant victory when the global oceans treaty reached agreement in march 2023. This treaty provides a pathway to establish global marine sanctuaries and has been a decade long project. * Greenpeace, Inc. used the Greenpeace ship arctic sunrise's tour in september 2023 in the us to campaign for indigenous sea rights and to elevate youth and indigenous voices. Greenpeace, Inc. Worked in support of the proposed chumash heritage national marine sanctuary along the central California coastline. * the Greenpeace network kept up pressure in 2023 on the us government and governments in east asia on issues and concerns around deep water fishing (dwf). To help move us policy to stop abuses in the dwf sector, we contributed to comments on proposed us legislation to address illegal, unreported and unregulated (iuu) fishing. We contributed policy recommendations to staff of the congressional executive commission on china in preparation for their hearing on forced labor in seafood supply chains. * we released the second edition of the high cost of cheap tuna retailer ranking report to raise awareness about the rampant human rights abuses and environmental destruction in global tuna supply chains and amplified this through coordinated media outreach. * with a combination of policy advocacy, coalition work with partners, and creative actions we prevented the greenlighting of deep sea mining in 2023 by the international seabed authority. * in may, Greenpeace, Inc. Published forever toxic, a report on the health threats from plastic recycling. * we continued our collaboration with allies in the Greenpeace network for a strong global plastics treaty.
Climate & energy - Greenpeace, Inc. is campaigning to address climate change. We worked toward a responsible fossil fuel phase-out and a rapid and just transition to a clean energy economy. Our work supported an immediate halt to all new permits and infrastructure for oil and gas exploration and extraction on public lands and waters. We supported policy changes that start the responsible phaseout of all oil and gas production, ensuring a just transition for impacted workers and communities. Finally, our campaign educated citizens on climate policies as compared to scientific predictions and solutions. 2023 Greenpeace Inc. Climate and energy campaign highlights include: * in California, we continued to educate people about the need for 3,200-foot buffer zones, enacted by sb 1137, to protect sensitive sites like homes and schools from the toxic emissions from oil and gas extraction. Sb 1137 was signed by governor newsom in 2022 but was paused after a successful petition by oil and gas producers and will now appear as a referendum on the 2024 ballot. * we worked with labor allies to help pass ab 421 in California. This is a new law that aims to reform the referendum process in California, change confusing ballot language, and strengthen transparency. * as part of our efforts in holding fossil fuel companies accountable, we drove calls and messages demanding legislators in California to pass a gas price gouging bill. * using creative communications and engaging people power, we held the California state administration accountable when there was a threat of new oil permits being approved. * at the federal level, we maintained pressure on the administration to declare a climate emergency by the end of 2023 and phase out and eventually ban oil and gas exports and unlock more federal funding for clean energy deployment by 2024. * we employed several effective tactics to pressure governments that import us gas. We collaborated with Greenpeace international to release a report revealing how fossil gas companies are driving government policies that lock the us and europe into hazardous new lng commitments. We also launched our tanker tracker in 2023 as a new online tool to track and tell the global story of us lng exports.
