The summer fellows program pairs quantitative and computational students with startups which can demonstrate a strong mentoring environment. Students attend pedagogical lecture series to introduce them to the ins and outs of joining and founding startup companies. The programs are designed to put the student into a real life situation whereby they (1) receive real life assignments, (2) are mentored by individuals with extensive experience in their field, and (3) have an opportunity to work in a professional environment.a "hackathon" (a hacker neologism) is an event when programmers meet to do collaborative computer programming. The spirit of the events is to collaboratively build programs and applications. As a result of these hackathons, students receive a significant benefit from their projects in that they meet in person, socialize, and start to communicate more effectively than when working together remotely. These sessions allow the students to leave the academic classroom, meet and compete with their peers and provide an environment for them to easily communicate with others in their respective fields.
