HALE PUNA FARM SCHOOL to HALE PUNA LOCAL FOOD SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVES TO SUPPORT ECONOMIC RESILIENCE.Education and Training: Through the Hale Puna Farm School, we provide local youth with hands-on training in sustainable agriculture, covering everything from planning to marketplace operations.Sustainable Agriculture Practices: Maintenance and expansion of our Food Forest and Farm, transforming traditional forest land into thriving vegetable and fruit gardens that promote permaculture and biodiversity.Community Engagement: Operating a Farmers Market that connects local producers with consumers, supporting local agriculture, and providing access to fresh, locally-grown produce.
Cultural and Historic Preservation Events:Hosted 5 cultural events aimed at preserving and promoting local traditions and historical practices:Tahitian dancing workshopSeedling workshopHawaiian wreath-making workshopLei-making workshopChildrens Day celebrationThese events engaged the community in the preservation of Kauais rich cultural heritage, reinforcing our mission to perpetuate the history of the westside.
Restoring Hale Puna - Building Restoration built in 1828 and abandoned since 2004. Applied for and secured a state grant-in-aid of $400,000 to commence restoration work on the historic Gulick-Rowell House in accordance with the Secretary of the Interiors Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. Other preservation efforts included adding ventilated boards to the windows and doors for better protection from the elements, installing security cameras in the structure, and adding extra support to weak lintels.
