Program areas at Harrisburg Area YMCA
Youth development is the largest program service at the Ymca. At the y, we believe in building future leaders through youth programs that interest, engage, and educate. That's why we provide a wide variety of special interest programs for our young members to learn together. Our programs such as teen achievers, mentoring, child development, and after-school child development, provide structured learning opportunities for youth that enrich cognitive, social, physical and emotional growth. Expenses include subsidies and direct financial assistance that enabled over 3,800 youth and teens to access services throughout dauphin and cumberland counties. In 2023 the Harrisburg Area Ymca taught 2,181 swim lessons, served 632 campers in the summer day camps, and had 800 children in our child care programs.
The Ymca's third-largest program service, social responsibility, encompasses initiatives that promote safe independent living and foster essential life skills. These programs aim to develop personal, educational, vocational, and leadership skills, while also training adults to safeguard youth. Additionally, they provide opportunities for older adults who may have limited chances for social interactions and physical activities. Aligned with our mission to contribute to the spiritual, mental, and physical development of each individual, the Harrisburg Area y's social services are tailored to address the specific needs of our community. Programs like active older adults, the 86-room adult residence program, and social services for individuals in the adult residence program exemplify how the Ymca fosters social responsibility, reinforcing our community and laying the groundwork for future generations to thrive.
The Ymca's second-largest program emphasizes promoting well-being and healthy living by advocating for holistic health that encompasses the spirit, mind, and body. The Ymca provided over 31,712 people with the supportive relationships and environments they need for their successful pursuit of health and well-being. As our nation has resumed in-person community engagement, the Ymca has seen a resurgence of need in the areas of evidence-based health support and community gathering opportunities. Individuals, youth, teens, and families are actively seeking assistance in addressing the escalating challenges of obesity, prolonged impacts of isolation, sedentary lifestyles, and the struggle for work/life balance. Our programs are inclusive, cost-effective, and welcome individuals of all faiths, backgrounds, abilities, and income levels. In 2023, we awarded $295,000 in direct financial assistance to individuals and families in need and subsidized programs by $3,170,294.
