Building Educational Capacity: HI leads the effort to build educational capacity through programs such as the Centralized Clinical Placement System, Bay Area and Los Angeles Resource Centers, and Clinical Faculty Development. HI is one of the founding organizations for a national initiative, National Education Progression in Nursing, to promote and build educational capacity to advance nurses to higher degrees. HI's California Simulation Alliance is a leader in development of simulation educators, having trained over 2,500 simulation faculty, utilizing courses with an interprofessional focus that are designed for all types of learners such as academic faculty, healthcare facility educators, and simulation operations personnel.
The General Program of HI includes efforts to prepare RNs for work in specialty areas such as ambulatory and perioperative nursing; educating faculty on the practice of teaching; contributing to health policy issues in California and nationally; and advancing the practice of nursing to care for people living in California.
Nursing Excellence: HI serves as the lead coordinating entity to implement the recommendations from the Institute of Medicine's Future of Nursing Report (2010) in California. The 2010 report focused on efforts to increase the number of RNs with a baccalaureate or higher degree, improve the availability of nurse residency programs, remove scope of practice barriers, and expand opportunities for nurses to lead and diffuse collaborative improvement efforts through State leadership of the Nurses on Boards Coalition. While HI is still working on initiatives identified in the Institute of Medicine Future of Nursing Report in 2010, HI is also evaluating the most recent National Academy of Medicine (formerly the Institute of Medicine) 2020-2030 Future of Nursing Report to identify how current initiatives and future projects will integrate with the 2020-2030 report recommendations. HI is working to better prepare RNs for enhanced roles in primary care settings and collaborating in research and education on the value and roles of nurses in interprofessional teams.
