Program areas at Henrico Christmas Mother
Henrico Christmas Mother provided food, clothing, books, toys, and other gifts to 1,434 families (4,205 individuals, including 2,176 children). We estimate that food for more than 66,000 meals was delivered through grocery gift cards and boxed non-perishable food. For many families, whose children receive free or reduced-price school breakfasts and lunches, the winter break is a hunger challenge, and the food they receive helps them to provide during the school vacation. Children receive warm clothing, hats, gloves, and socks in addition to age-appropriate books, toys, games, coloring books, and crayons. For many senior and disabled adults, the holidays can cause an increased sense of isolation and despair, and the Henrico Christmas Mother shopping experience allows them to feel supported and valued. Each receives a gift card for his or her own shopping in addition to the boxed food and grocery gift cards described above. In addition, they choose sleepwear or home goods, personal care items, and other gifts. We offer joy in the midst of a very uncertain and difficult time.
