Program areas at HB
(a) the uta hagen institute for full time study:all fy23 programs were held in person. (i) hagen summer intensive: 6-week, 5-day, full-time intensive program focused on uta hagen's approach to acting technique and rehearsal process. 6/26/23 to 8/04/23, 12 students served, 7 scholarships granted. (ii) hagen core training program: a one-year (three-term) intensive full-time curriculum for actors utilizing uta hagen's approach to acting technique and rehearsal process. 9/12/22 to 6/05/23,13 students served, 4 scholarships granted. (iii) hagen teachers lab: a five-day intensive full-time program for(continued on schedule o) actors and educators interested in teaching uta hagen's acting exercises and methodology 08/7/23 to 8/11/23, 10 students served, 3 scholarships granted. Travel expenses for 1 uta hagen award recipient were sponsored by the college of fellows of the american theatre. (b) Studio classes for training and practice: fall, winter, spring, and summer terms: acting, acting improvisation, acting on camera, scene study, acting technique, movement & the body, musical theater & singing, speaking voice, speech, directing, playwriting, and more. 3584 enrollments, in 313 classes/year, september through august, 1262 students served, 69 scholarships granted, 198 work-study grants. Classes were offered in both online and in-person formats. (c) HB Studio special workshops: in addition to the regular term-length Studio class schedule, HB offered short term (1-5 sessions) skill building and special focus workshops. 637 enrollments in 53 workshops, 399 students served, 7 scholarships granted, 33 work-study grants. HB offered a series of 5 financial empowerment workshops @ $5/session, tailored to performing artists' needs. Workshops were conducted in both online and in-person formats from september 12 through the year's end. (d) residency projects: HB Studio's residency program provides space for artists to rehearse and present a new work at an early- to mid-stage of development with the production capability of the HB playwrights foundation theater space. Six (6) week-long residencies, featuring 47 artists, each culminating in a public presentation; 47 artists, 12 performances, 323 audience. Projects: matt butler, reckless son (4/18/23-4/24/23); deirdre macnamara, archipelago (5/15/23-5/21/23); maria cominis, women of zalongo (6/5/23-6/11/23); kate fuglei, in the blink of an eye (6/12/23-6/18/23); ashley teague, recovery (7/2/23-7/9/23); spiderwoman theater & beautiful canoe collective, journey the beautiful canoe (7/17/23-7/25/23). HB also hosted acting out, a resident company of 20 formerly incarcerated persons. Acting out took part in a collaborative workshop with residency artist matt butler, 4/18/23-4/19/23 and began work on an original project to be presented the following season. (e) community partnership: winston transitionshb partnered with nonprofit private nyc-based winstonpreparatory school, an innovative day school for students with learning differences. HB teaching artists worked with students in winston's 'transitions' program--those who have graduated from 12th grade, but need additional support to transition to the workforce or college. The program served 30 young adults, with 13 60-minute sessions over 9 months, using actors' tools to support self-expression, independent learning, communication and social skills. HB also welcomed an intern from winston to work on-site in the Studio's office to train in workplace skills. (f) public programs: theater program(i) HB Studio works-in-progress productions and public events: thirteen (13) public events over 14 dates, featuring 141 artists and serving an audience of 433. You n yours - the father file (multi-media in-person), 9/11/22; the village trip: on the road, 9/17/22; the greenwich village project: cultural icons of greenwich village, 10/26/22; catalonia at HB: fireflies (virtual screening & talk with catalan artists), 11/11/22; an evening with dael orlandersmith and felice rosser (1/31/23); independent study project winter, spring, summer presentations 3/18/23, 5/28/23, 8/20/23; design for living at 90, 4/3/23; art of directing, 5/22/23; the seagull, 6/3/23, 6/4/23; the real poems (robert mcqueen), 6/26/23, 6/27/23; radical and fragile bodies (alejandro de la guerra), 8/12/23 . (ii) works-in-progress readings:hb hosted the bar collective, presenting ten (10) staged readings of new plays in progress developed at the Studio; readings were presented in the HB playwrights theatre 10/2/2022, 10/5/2022, 10/6/2022, 10/7/2022, 10/8/2022, 10/9/2022, 10/11/2022, 10/13/2022, 10/14/2022, 10/15/2022, featuring 93 artists, to a total audience of 249. Readings featured: illusion or (me & renoir at nate 'n al's by gary kahn, doris & bertie by tiffa foster, knifework by michael d. sharp, a hard look by elise catera, a part of our lives by ellis charles hoffmeister, life? Or theater? By marie pohl, john & sherlock by beth jacobson, school's out by richie v. dang, the valley by monica stamas, hyannis by pat golden. (iii) moderated public talks: a series of public conversations with artists about contemporary theater concerns. Six (6) public talks were held in fy22, featuring 14 artists and serving an audience of 238. Topics included: the whole world over: refugee art making & making home in the west village (live); and five (5) podcast conversations (HB insight series) with artists matt butler, kayhan irani, deirdre macnamara, maria cominis, and kate fuglei.
