Hika'alani's mission is to re-establish Wai'auia and Ulupo as centers of stewardship and learning where Hawaiian culture can thrive again, preserving the traditional way of life. The na hua kepau program works to publish Hawaiian language stories from the Hawaiian newspaper archive, increasing their accessibility to supply the growing population in Hawaii. Ulupo is being restored for place and practice, serving as a place for education and conservation where skilled guardian-caretakers can learn how to be stewards of our land's resources. Na hua kepau programworking toward the publication of Hawaiian language stories that are currently only available in the Hawaiian newspaper archive, increasing circulation of and access to, these traditional texts to supply the growing population of Hawaiian language speakers with materials for reading, discussion, literacy and cultural study, and further creativity. There were 18 people on the project (3 directors, 7 indexing staff, 5 transcribers, and 3 interns).
