Transition / Energy shift:to address climate change through a just building thermal Energy transition at the speed and scale required we have developed the gas to geo decarbonization pathway. This path relies on a novel form of district Energy we proposed in 2017, a single-pipe ambient-temperature ground source (aka geothermal) heat pump network. Installed and owned by gas companies in streets and grown over time, these networks transform the gas company into a combustion free thermal utility, accelerating our path to zero emissions. This creates good jobs, improves health, lower grid costs, and is affordable, accessible, reliable, and safe.triage / methane emissions:methane emissions are a rapid powerful lever to address climate change. Just 7% of leaks from underground pipes emit half of all the leaked gas. Heet's research helped pass a first-in-the-nation state law that gas distribution pipe "super-emitters" must be prioritized for repair. Heet research then determined a method to identify these 7% of gas leaks that emit half of all leaked gas. In 2019, heet agreed to monitor and verify the resulting state program until 2024, cutting in half the state's emissions from gas distribution pipes.truth / narrative shift:our Energy choices are connected to our health, wealth and well-being. The narrative that gas is clean, green, affordable and the fastest, best way to cook does not match the data. Together with allies, heet has researched and published on the chemical composition of the regional gas supply, the real emissions impacts and the health, safety and equity impacts of the gas system. Heet has engaged in community outreach, listening and refining ways to integrate the latest science and data into community narrative, building shared and science-based understanding.
