Program areas at HOS
Sparrows Nest This program has seven thrift store location Cary, McHenry, Mudelein, Palatine, Woodstock, Third Lake and Arlington Heights. Inventory for the stores is received from donations which are then re-sold. The income from sales helps to support existing programs within the organization.
Subsidized Apartment Program SAP formerly Transitional Apartment Program This program provides a vital bridge between the Transitional Shelter and community housing. SAP offers four units of subsidized housing for clients who have a job but cannot afford to pay Affordable Housing Program rent. Many of these clients need to pay off utility arrears and repair credit history before they become eligible to sign a rental contract for housing in the community. SAP clients generally stay in the program for a year before moving into the Organizations Affordable Housing Program or into other housing within the community. Rapid Rehousing Program Through grants from the Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development HUD, the Organization manages short-term to medium-term rental assistance for families who have met the HUD definition of homelessness and have employment but have experienced a life-event that put them into financial jeopardy. These families are ready to bypass transitional shelter services and enter directly into an apartment.
Affordable Housing Program The Organization has 29 units of affordable housing for low to moderate income families who were homeless, or at risk of becoming homeless. These housing units are for women and their children who have an annual income of 50 percent or less of the Area Median Income, offering a safe, comfortable place to live.
