Program areas at Hospitality Homes
Through its network of close to 120 host homes together with an increasing number of donated apartments and deep relationships with select local partner hotels and corporate furnished apartments, Hospitality Homes offers not only a comfortable bed in which to sleep, but also a compassionate presence in an unfamiliar city and a welcoming home to return to for families and friends who spend long days at the hospital, supporting their loved ones. Hospitality Homes is unique among Boston-area hospital housing programs because it is truly inclusive and open to all families, regardless of their income level, background, nationality, ethnicity, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability, age, or diagnosis or medical facility of care.(Continued on Schedule O)(Continued from Form 990, Page 2)Over 60 percent of the program's guests have annual household incomes under $50,000, and all families are challenged with the high costs associated with serious and/or chronic illness. By providing housing atno or low cost, Hospitality Homes seeks to alleviate financial constraints and enable families to focus both their financial and their emotional resources on their hospitalized loved ones. Many guests report that, without the housing that Hospitality Homes offers, their family members simply would not be able to access the life-saving or life-changing treatment they need.Over the course of its 40-year history, Hospitality Homes has provided close to 231,000 nights of housing. In the last ten years alone, the organization has helped 6,458 patients, served 19,481 guests who traveled from over 50 U.S. States and Territories and 71 countries, saving them more than $18.8M in estimated equivalent hotel fees. Hospitality Homes believes that patients and their families deserve compassionate, affordable, and convenient accommodations while receiving medical care away from home. During 2023, as the pandemic continued to wind down, approximately half of our volunteer host community returned and increased the number of nights they provided almost to the levels of the full host community previously. We also reflected on the various new options we created and continued with some of the new and different resources we leveraged in the previous 3 years. We increased the number of donated apartments from 3 to 9 and continued efforts to seek support from specific grant providers to assist with our mission of health equity and to fund other non-hosted lodging options for patients with specific needs not appropriate for a host home. The success of our approach is reflected in our consistent track record of growth and impact. In the last 10 years, Hospitality Homes has helped 6,458 patients and provided 68,076 nights of housing. The program has broadened its impact, increasing families served by 139% and nights provided by 185%. Over 40% of guests with long-term treatment needs return for additional nights of lodging. Another key indicator of the organization's success is the financial relief provided to patients.
