PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN 2023(1) In a period of just eight weeks, Huukuiko identified and successfully completed the purchase of 25.9 acres of Coast Miwok Ancestral Homeland in Nicasio, California,on July 3, 2023. This was the first (and, to date, only) rematriation of land in Marin County to its original, Indigenous caretakers. In a remarkable coincidence (unknown at the time of purchase), this land abuts the site of the last, established Coast Miwok village in Marin, which was lost almost 150 years ago.(2) Following the purchase, members of Huukuikos board and the Coast Miwok TribalCouncil hosted three separate gatherings on the land: (1) get-acquainted and Q&Ameeting exclusively for neighbors; (2) large appreciation party for individual donors;(3) intimate introduction to the land at the request of a public charity for a few of its program managers and large donors.(3) Huukuiko retained the services of Wondjini Research Institute (WRI) to perform aPhase 1 Archeological/Environmental Review of 1800 Old Rancheria Road, whichwas undertaken the end of November.(4) Huukuiko retained the services of Baxter Botanicals Tanya Baxter to spend a dayonsite at the end of November and prepare a Stewardship Habitat Restoration Planthat can be used as a framework for future ecological restoration activitiescombining Tribal Council Indigenous knowledge with native plant communities bothalready onsite and those that may potentially be re-introduced successfully to ourenvironment in Nicasio.
