Program areas at i2 Learning Foundation
Full year program:The foundation has commenced a full year curriculam redesign for learning in middle school. With a focus on making schoolwork more interdisciplinary, i2 Full Year program aims to make school more like the real world with learning that is more meaningful and authentic to students.i2 Full Year is a complete re-write of an entire year of 4th, 5th, and 6th grade. All disciplines and state standards are addressed through projects that are based on one theme per grade. A focused study was conducted on the Attleboro school district with three middle schools, grades 5 and 6. A third of the teaching team participated in the program allowing evaluators to compare students in the i2 program with students who were not participating in the program. Evaluators conducted three classroom observations, two student surveys and four teacher surveys. Each school had a dedicated coach who visited several times a month.i2 Learning also provides complete course kits containing all materials needed to run each of the courses. Some courses have technology requirements such as laptops and internet access that i2 does not provide and these requirements are discussed with schools before choosing an appropriate program. Teacher and student guides are available for each course, with some course booklets available in Spanish.
General STEM programs: The foundation develops programs in conjunction with educational institutions and helps implement them in classroom settings. These programs will focus on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) topics.Day of AI: i2 Learning has collaborated with MIT RAISE to create Day of AI. Day of AI offers a full school day's worth of curriculum and activities for elementary, middle school, and high school students. The program is completely free and accessible to students and teachers of all backgrounds and abilities. 3,000 teachers registered for the program indicating 500-750 schools offered the program. The program had international reach with Australia running Day of AI nationally and Uruguay translating the curriculum and offering it in October. The NYC Department of Education, Boston and broader Massachusetts ran the program. MIT conducted the marketing and positioning while i2 Learning provided curricular support. Day of AI was completely paid for and required less work in comparison to other initiatives. A larger program is planned for May 2023.
Attleboro Public School Grant: The Grant funds will be used in accordance with the goals of the program and will be used to pay the salary and benefits of a full-time project based learning coach, materials needed in classrooms for project-based learning projects, and teacher training for project-based learning. The Program will be implemented by the Grantee in accordance with the Agreement.
Massachusetts and San Diego STEM Week: The Foundation conducts STEM Week programs for the schools located in the state of Massachussets and City of Boston. The Foundation develops immersive project-based science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs for middle school students with the intent of increasing the number of students, especially girls and other traditionally under-representdgroups, who persue STEM fields of study and eventually careers in STEM. In partnership with schools and other educational institutions, the Foundation transforms middle schools into STEM learning labs to expose and engage students in different STEM fields. During STEM Week, regularly scheduled course periods are replaced by hands-on curriculum developed by MIT and a number of other leading STEM organizations. Over the five days, teachers and students work in teams to solve real-world problems in a classroom where hands-on experimentation, critical thinking, and collaboration are encouraged and used as teaching techniques to engage and inspire students.i2 programs are designed to be implemented with teachers and students of all backgrounds and abilities, including English language learners.
