Innocence Project New Orleans aims to protect the innocent within the criminal justice system and was founded in 2001. Its mission is to free innocent, life-sentenced prisoners in Louisiana and South Mississippi, support clients after their release, and advocate for sensible criminal justice policies. In 2019, IPNO exonerated two innocent clients: Royal Clark after 17 years, four months, and 14 days; and Archie Williams after 36 years. The organization also freed Eric Prudholm who was wrongfully incarcerated for 37 years and Elvis Brooks.

In 2023, ipno won the freedom of ten people, three of whom were factually innocent and seven serving excessive sentences. The organization provided post release re-entry support to over fifty clients. Ipno launched the second chance at life initiative, a Project of ipno's unjust punishment Project (upp).
