Providence advances progress on our carbon negative goal and in 2023 we estimated that we decreased emissions by over 12 percent compared to our 2019 baseline. In addition, our efforts led to the introduction of the green hospitals act, legislation modeled after providence that would provide critical federal funding to weatherize and modernize health care facilities. Providence completed a comprehensive climate resilience plan in alignment with our commitment to the us department of health and human services climate pledge. We continue to reduce greenhouse gas emissions with a focus on led lighting upgrades, water conservation, more efficient delivery of nitrous oxide gas during anesthesia, and advancing our waste optimization work across all hospitals and clinics.program service accomplishmentsbiomolecular research: in 2023, isb researchers published 116 academic research papers in a range of high-profile journals. "-5 district leaders participated in the "secondary stem project" monthly leadership team planning sessions.district science leaders: -9 regional directors: as co-director of Washington state laser, we provided monthly professional growth sessions for science leaders, covering all wa school districts. -18 school district science/stem leaders: as director of puget sound laser alliance, 1 of the 9 regions, we provided monthly professional growth sessions for science leaders of this collaborative across king and pierce counties; 18 of 36 districts participated.post-secondary science educationcommunity colleges: "next-gen Biology learning network"-35 community and technical colleges and next-gen biologists from non-degree granting research institutes in Washington participated in year 2 of 5 of a national science foundation grant - research coordination network (rcn): 2020/21 incubator to build readiness and capacity. 2021-2026 network to build a beneficial bridge, with 2-way learning for isb scientists, other next-gen biologists and the cc faculty and students. Undergraduate students: "isb research interns"-21 research interns across 75% of isb research labs. Funded by an nsf research experiences for undergraduates grant year 3, and other funding sources obtained for some students.-10 mentors trained on how to guide students with effective feedback.community outreachhigh school groups: "isb tour / career pathways experience" -3 tour groups came to isb in-person for a learning experienceisb also held various symposia, seminars, and workshops to disseminate basic knowledge about Systems Biology and create dialog about leading-edge topics. During 2023, 1,796 external persons attended such events.
