Accomplishments: to continue to advance health equity by reducing healthcare disparities, iomc conducted programs to discuss, determine and dedicate resources to positively impact the underrepresented and communities. Programmatic series of webinars- advancing health equity by reducing health care disparities: the Institute of Medicine conducted six(6) webinars in 2023 addressing key issues addressing the social determinants of health to advancing health care equity by reducing healthcare disparities. 1.the role of non-governmental organizations (ngo's) in public health & the status of public health funding & infrastructure in 2024 (11.28.2023) 2.opioid use disorder and medication-assisted recovery (9.2023) 3.patient safety issues- who is keeping an eye on them? (5.2023) 4.resistance to childhood vaccines-is this a rising public health issue? (3.2023) 5.advancing maternal health and child-new workgroup- prioritizing issues & action plan (2.2023) 6.chicago family health center & the thrive exchange revitalization south shore project (1.2023) in addition to hosting educational webinars on these key programmatic efforts, iomc hosted three - in-programs, they are: 1) integrating and building lives - from homelessness to living healthier - health care, mental health, social determinants of health, & sustainable measures objectives: - identify the mental health challenges and options for care - obtain current options for insurance benefits and assistance - be able to describe the opioids crisis and its relationship to behavioral health - compare and contrast what programs are available on integrating back into communities - relate the human, economic and social impact costs to communities - identify the mental health challenges and improve options for care - describe the opioid crisis and its relationship to behavioral health - relate the human, economic and social impact to costs to communities speakers: moderator and speaker- dr. tom allen, md, fellow, executive medical director, health service corporation, and chief psychiatrist, bcbs medicaid- Illinois - mark mulroe, president, a safe haven foundation - greeting - dr. kiran joshi, md, mph, senior medical officer, cook county dept. of public health - dr. tariq butt, md, vice president of health affairs, access community health network - lee rusch, director at west side heroin/opioid task force 2) 2023 annual healthcare leadership awards and annual meeting - june22, 2023. The keynote speaker was dr. sameer vohra, md, jd, ma, director, Illinois department of public health. Over 125 healthcare and public health leaders attended the event and discussed the key issues impacting underrepresented populations, challenged communities and the programmatic issues focused on advancing healthcare equity. 3) in addition, iomc conducted its 9th state of health of Chicago was conducted in december 2023. This is a bi-annual convening with a diverse panel of speakers to address key areas impacting healthcare and public health in Chicago and the state of Illinois. A panel of eight senior level leaders discussed the need, impact and graded the efforts of the city and state of Illinois. The speakers were dr. abha agrawal, md, facp, fache, cmo, humboldt health hospital, dr. charles barron, md, mba, cmo, aunt martha's health and wellness, dr. lee francis, md, mph, ceo & president, erie family health, fellow of iomc, dr. kimberlee guenther, ph.d., chief impact officer at united way of metro Chicago, dr. lamar hasbrouck, md, mph, coo, cook county, dept. of public health, ms. kate r. maehr, executive director & ceo, greater Chicago food depository, ms. swathi staley, chief community investment officer & general counsel, ymca of metropolitan Chicago, and dr. sameer vohra, md, jd,ma, director, Illinois department of public health. This robust discussion is used to define the programmatic areas of focus of iomc for the next two years. The key programmatic areas of focus are: 1.maternal and child health 2.lead exposure- pathways to children and communities 3.homelessness 4.nursing home reform 5.telehealth 6.dcfs placement crisis maternal & child health workgroup: made progress in addressing transportation issues with providers with the state of Illinois and solutions to provide better access to care. Currently working on an implicit bias survey with the fqhc's to conduct through out the state of Illinois. Define other key goals for the future work of this workgroup. - ob-managed care networks and no level ii ultrasound on the south side. - address the lack of ob care in specific areas. - address the lack of transportation preventing access to health care. - promote the need for implicit bias training. - identify phantom networks and cook county/uic declining to provide services for plans. - expand bandwidth with mental health issues. - educate others and state of Illinois on the need for behavioral health. New project effort- pathways to lead - children and communities- developed a memo of understanding with the lead abatement resource foundation to develop an awareness campaign to communities, parents and educators to address blood lead levels in children and address hot zones of elevated lead levels in soil. In development with their partner organization. Other workgroups are under development. These programs are part of iomc's series on public health, population and community health, and reducing health disparities to achieve health equities. Iomc inducted 18 new fellows in 2023. Achieve - medical and dental student career and networking program: achieve program has 49 students in the career and networking program. It offers programs throughout the year to support currently enrolled students, male, black or latino, in a four-year accredited university or college program located in the Chicago area. In 2020, the Institute of Medicine of chicago(iomc) was awarded a two-year grant to develop a career mentoring and networking program for black and latino male medical and dental students currently enrolled in accredited four-year medical or dental schools and universities. The otho s.a. sprague memorial Institute provided a funding grant to develop this program. Graduation rates have decreased in black and latino male medical and dental students since 1917. This specific program aims to encourage and support students and assist in building a solid network in their respective fields. 2023 healthcare award recipients: iomc recognized the outstanding efforts of four leaders at the 2023 healthcare awards and annual meeting. The awardees were selected from entries submitted -members and non-members are eligible for the awards. 2022 innovation in healthcare delivery award - dr. ian jasenof, md, facog,mha,cpe - healthcare community efforts and maternal & child health 2022 innovation in healthcare delivery award (system) - sinai urban health Institute, community health workers, sinai Chicago. 2023 humanitarian global health award - dr. kaleem malik, md, ms, faaem- efforts with humanity first usa and global projects. Presented the 2023 leadership award at the state of health of Chicago convening to: 2023 leadership award- dr. allison arwady, md, mph for her efforts and service to the city of Chicago as it commissioner of public health.
Other accomplishments include: increased membership by 9.22%. Assessed and improved the financial picture of the organization to meet its priorities now and the future. Conducted post-program evaluations with attendees to continue to improve the quality of the programs and address key and critical issues of the membership, impacting public health, population health and community health. Addressed other professionals in discussion to address additional areas that suggest social and systemic change such as mental health youth crisis.
