Program areas at ILA
Conferences: the ila brings people together across distance and disciplines, virtually and in person, to bridge theory and practice and spark those "aha" moments that improve Leadership locally and globally. The ila held four live online virtual conferences and two in-person conferences this year, each organized in large part by volunteers from one or more of the ila's member communities working in concert with the ila's staff, to further the professional development of participants. These events, attended by 1500 individuals included: ila continued its industry leading hyflex model for the 2022 global conference, wisdom in times of crises. Attendees and presenters could choose to only attend the two-day online global conference 6-7 october or purchase the all-access pass for an additional four days of in- person conferencing 13-16 october. Unique opportunities for each conference mode were expanded to include virtual "book buzz" sessions with Leadership authors and an in-person awards luncheon that honored our awardees. In total 1200 attendees from 63 countries participated in 475 presentations, workshops, panels, posters, roundtables, symposia, organized around 17 specialized streams. Plenary panels explored: political Leadership: fragmentation or solidarity in a shifting world; wise Leadership in a world of misinformation and disinformation; and women and Leadership at this moment in time. Traditions such as the International student case competition, the Leadership authors meet and greet, the emerging scholars research consortium, and networking receptions augmented the participant experience. During the global conference, ila lifetime achievement awards were bestowed to barbara c. crosby, associate professor emerita, hubert h. humphrey school of public affairs, university of Minnesota; george r. goethals, e. claiborne robins distinguished professor in Leadership studies, jepson school of Leadership studies, university of richmond; susan r. komives, professor emerita, student affairs graduate program, university of Maryland; and (posthumously) gama perruci, dean of the mcdonough center at marietta college. The ila diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging virtual summit brought together over 175 registrants from 25-26 august to explore how Leadership and practice drive inclusion and belonging for the greater good and to gain a deeper insight about global inclusion practices and deib journeys in various markets. Deep dive workshops taught innovative practices and cutting-edge theories addressing the ways organizations and global communities come together to cultivate Leadership in action to drive meaningful change. Leadership researchers and specialists from canada, germany, india, norway, south africa, and the united states shared theories and approaches on how driving change at individual and organizational levels contributes to inclusion in the corporate, non-profit, and ngo sectors, as well as societies at large.the 6th Leadership education academy was held 31 july to august 4. Intentionally designed by Leadership educators for Leadership educators at all stages of their careers teaching Leadership in a variety of settings and sectors. Fifty participants experienced a rigorous and compressive curriculum and practiced a range of instructional strategies and pedagogues in a supportive, interactive learning environment. The ten professional facilitators included top Leadership educators, coaches, and published authors from the field who modeled best practices and provided opportunities for participants to engage in a practice-feedback-reflection loop. The 6th doctoral student consortium grew by 36%, creating an online forum for 68 students at all stages of their degree program to learn together and create a community of future scholars. The sessions included presentations by and discussions with a cadre of established scholars, dissertation chairs, and authors who provided tips for success, goal setting, and the dissertation process. Informal conversations with the faculty and student colleagues supplement learning-focused presentations.
Publicationspodcasts are an important vehicle for providing Leadership resources to the public and to ila members. This year's interviews and conversations with leaders, academics, researchers, and practitioners from diverse sectors provide resources and inspiration on a wide range of topics and challenges. The ila continues to partner on three podcast series. Phronesis: practical wisdom for leaders is produced in partnership with ila fellow and past ila board member scott j. allen and is ila's official podcast with 52 new episodes this year. Ila fellow maureen metcalf partners with ila on a series of 12 global Leadership episodes within her podcast innovating Leadership. Ila members lauren bullock and dan jenkins partner with ila to feature the work of ila members on a series of episodes within the 37 new episodes this year of the Leadership educator podcast. The ila Leadership for the greater good blog series publishes inspiring authors who apply their Leadership knowledge and practical wisdom to inform and inspire readers, advance Leadership knowledge and practice for a better world, and provide perspectives on current events. Topics include leading with care: what's stopping us? ; leading from stillness; a systems approach to tackling severe and multiple disadvantage; cultivating a culture of yes: the courage to teach followership through the seven elements of improv; integrating self and system: an urgent Leadership challenge; jacinda ardern and the challenges of Leadership; the Leadership of elizabeth holmes: lessons from the dark side of silicon valley; rise of the machines; calling purpose to you; leading the counter-resistance: rhetorical tropes in defense of privilege; Leadership concerns us in the plural; the war in ukraine & Leadership as an essentially contested concept.a grassroots Leadership & arts for social change primer: for educators, organizers, activists & rabble-rousers, edited by susan j. erenrich and debra deruyver (emerald publishing) brings together ore than 30 activist-artist leaders to discuss their work inspiring and creating the positive changes needed to meet the daunting problems facing people and planet. Chapters are divided into six broad categories: community engaged theatre; exhibitions of art, politics, and resistance; troubadours of conscience; cultural activists in the fine and performing arts; participatory democracy and the role of the arts in social movements; and people power and community building. The authors interpret and make sense of the world's complexities, struggles, and triumphs in ways that help us better relate to each other and work toward our shared future. They are skilled observers and skilled storytellers, whatever their medium capacities often found in the most effective leaders.the interface newsletter honors the fact that the ila's membership includes people located in many, and often multiple, independent systems who all interface in the ila around their commitment to advance Leadership knowledge and practice for a better world. Interface shares articles highlighting Association news, contributions by ila members such as the blogs and podcasts, and resurfaces timeless Leadership resources to make them newly available to members and the public at large.
Membership services the membership team continues to deliver a range of services and benefits to ila members around the world, including the ila intersections member portal with the member directory, discussion forums, member community forums, and access to member benefits; member pricing on all conferences and free webinars; and a member copy of their selected building Leadership bridges book. The continuing expansion of ila intersections helps ila members find and collaborate with others with shared interests while providing access to decades of compiled member resources. Over a thousand members participated in one or more of the thirteen new Leadership perspectives live webinars. Many were offered at two times to maximize the convenience for members across time zones. This year's new webinars included: african Leadership: powerful paradigms for the 21st century; work-life harmony: why it matters and how to craft it; essentials of followership: when you finally realize that Leadership isn't enough; from uncertainty to transformation: emergent generative team Leadership from the void; designing and publishing your (public) Leadership research: research gaps & common pitfalls; when everyone leads: how the toughest challenges get seen and solved; positive Leadership: cultivating communities for flourishing; advancing Leadership programs: asking guiding questions; el crculo (the circle) leading across generations: a model from young latino leaders; provocation as Leadership: the art and practice of challenging the status quo; aesop and the follies of followers; advancing Leadership programs: using assessment frameworks; followership in healthcare: how we got here, where we are now, where we can go next.
