Program areas at Rising Seas Institute

Educational Expeditions - We organize Fact Finding Expeditions to glaciers and ice sheets which are the ultimate source of rising sea level so that leaders understand the magnitude, potential abruptness, and unstoppable aspects of rising sea level, particularly Greenland and Antarctica. We also serve as expert lecturers on other select trips. These are high level discussions with scientists, military leaders, and leaders from across society who can help assess and prepare for change in the public interest.
Public Lectures and media interviews - The Founders of the Rising Seas Institute, John Englander and Robert W. Corell, have given more than a hundred presentations and interviews over the last decade explaining the science of rising sea level and the need to plan better for adaptation. The New York Times published a major article about climate change by Bret Stephens on October 30th, 2022, and credited the work of the Rising Seas Institute. Other media interviews have included The Discovery Channel, NPR, Fox Business Channel, and China TV, as examples. One particular lecture in London at the prestigious Royal Institution in February 2019, "Sea level rise can no longer be stopped; what next?" has been watched on YouTube by well over three hundred and fifty thousand people globally.
Puerto Rico Program - Starting in mid-2021, the Rising Seas Institute has partnered with the Puerto Rico Science Technology and Research Trust, a 501c3 to create a program, the Caribbean Center for Rising Seas, effectively as a joint venture. The goal is to help Puerto Rico and the Caribbean adapt and thrive in the new era of increasing flood risk from storms, tides, and sea level rise. The program will establish Puerto Rico's leadership as a center of excellence and innovation, serving as a model on how to prepare for the challenges ahead.
General program expenses.
Depreciation on camera equipment for programs.
Professional Societies - One of our primary efforts is to educate select professions about the facts and impacts of rising sea level on their work and clients, as an efficient way to reach a wider audience. For example, teaching on programs to architects, engineers, and those in construction is a very focused, efficient way to raise the awareness and understanding. Our workshops and lectures to professional societies in Florida, New York, California, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, and internationally have reached thousands annually, and our public impact has raised the understanding for more than a hundred thousand people.
