International Society for the History of Rhetoric promotes literary education and research activities. Its purpose is to advance the study of both the theory and practice of rhetoric in all periods and languages, as well as its relationship to poetics, literary theory and criticism, philosophy, politics, religion, law, and other aspects. The society publishes "retorica", its quarterly journal, through the U.C. Press and distributes it to all members and institutional subscribers.
