Interval House

Shelter and housinginterval House is a six-time u.s. presidential award-winning program, nationally recognized for pioneering comprehensive shelter and supportive services for victims of domestic violence and their children since 1979. The agency operates a full continuum of services at six emergency shelters and transitional housing sites, and 12 comprehensive community service and satellite centers in the high-risk communities of los angeles and orange counties. Since its doors first opened, Interval House has housed over 25,000 individuals, served over 3 million meals, and counseled over 800,000 victims. Interval House is distinguished by its unique cultural and linguistic expertise. Over 98% of Interval House's staff and advocates are multilingual, ethnically diverse, and have been personally affected by domestic violence - - offering comprehensive services in over 70 different languages. Although Interval House has historically specialized in intervention and prevention services for victims of domestic violence, it has expanded tremendously over the past 20 years into working with homelessness and housing issues. Interval House's multifaceted continuum of housing programs includes emergency shelters, transitional housing, and permanent housing and rental assistance programs. Domestic violence shelters: Interval House opened its first emergency shelter in 1979, serving as the foundational "lifeline" for victims of domestic violence and their children in crisis, and opened the nation's first transitional domestic violence shelter in 1980, offering continued support to families that need a longer transition period to become self-sufficient, contributing members of their communities. Today, the agency operates six confidentially located emergency shelters and transitional housing sites for domestic violence victims and their children. Permanent housing programs: Interval House is recognized as a "model" housing program by the u.s. department of housing and urban development (hud) for tailoring cutting-edge housing approaches and programs to meet the specialized needs of underserved homeless and at-risk individuals and families. Interval House is one of the largest providers of rental assistance programs in its region, with a specialization in serving high-need households facing a multitude of complex cultural, linguistic and economic barriers to housing stability. Interval House has been at the forefront of homelessness prevention and rapid rehousing, having started the nation's first domestic violence rapid rehousing program (1995) and was for 20 years the only domestic violence program utilizing the housing first best practice model. The agency has since been continuously recognized by hud representatives for its excellent leadership in developing successful homelessness prevention and rapid rehousing programs that routinely exceed all client outcome and financial expenditure goals. Regional housing systems have also adopted Interval House's program design as a best practice and the agency's data collection methods as their standardized tools. The organization currently operates numerous rapid re-housing scattered sites and exclusive linkages to rental housing.

Over the past year, the organization provided safe shelter and emergency housing assistance to nearly 2,000 people, responded to over 5,000 crisis calls, and reached over 24,000 people through its community education and prevention programs.as the nation's first survivor-led program, all Interval House programs and services are provided by a staff that is unique in the nation. Since the opening of the Interval House, it has welcomed staff who are former victims, offered them mentoring, training, job opportunities, and constant promotion within the agency, and moved them into the leadership roles they hold today. Most of the Interval House's staff have spent the majority of their adult lives at the agency and are now themselves legendary leaders who have been recognized with the nation's top awards in the domestic violence movement. These "graduates" demonstrate, in a heartwarming and inspirational way, how domestic violence survivors can become outstanding educators, advocates and leaders in their communities. This fundamental belief in inclusion was a primary motivation for Interval House since it first opened its doors in 1979, and it has been the heart and soul of the program for more than 44 years. This unique combination of skills and resources has been key to Interval House's extraordinary success in offering award-winning supportive services and outreach 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in over 70 languages. Interval House was recognized for its high ranking in several quality factors, including strong leadership, promoting a supportive and inclusive culture, philosophy of training and development from within, and the passion of the unique, inspired staff. Interval House received the top award in leadership for its executive director, and was the highest-ranking nonprofit organization in the small business category, where it was in the highest ranking overall in the entire region.pandemic response and expanded services- the organization greatly expanded its scope of award-winning services during the covid-19 pandemic, lifting the emotional and financial burden for hundreds of families in crisis, and has continued to meet the evolving needs of survivors and those at risk for homelessness as covid-19 shifts from pandemic to endemic. Over the past year, the organization operated its shelter programs at full capacity, strengthening safety and support for victims of domestic violence and their children; secured additional funding to expand best-practice rental assistance programs to assist vulnerable households who were financially devastated by the pandemic; and implemented multilingual education and outreach programs to increase health equity and access among culturally underserved and disproportionally impacted communities. The organization also made improvements to its children's center, continuing to provide a safe, loving and empowering environment for its youngest residents to develop and thrive, as well as enhanced facility accommodations for individuals with physical disabilities as part of its historic and continuous efforts to effectively serve the most vulnerable communities. By expanding its programs and continuing to strengthen its infrastructure, the organization continues to meet the immediate and emerging needs of homeless and at-risk households from underserved and marginalized communities, including domestic violence victims and their children, while also increasing its capacity to address the needs of the community at large.coordinated care - Interval House has continued to strengthen collaborative efforts to coordinate services with allied community, government, and criminal justice partners to deliver effective, efficient, and coordinated care for its service population. Most recently, Interval House established coordinated systems that facilitated and expedited domestic violence victim access to emergency housing vouchers in los angeles county and orange county, and continues to ensure that underserved domestic violence victims are represented and their needs are effectively addressed within the network of multidisciplinary agencies in our community. Interval House's historic partnerships with local law enforcement also help ensure protection and safety for the victims it serves, while its longstanding leadership on interagency forums, task forces, and educational forums are concerted efforts to raise awareness and increase access to services for vulnerable community members.
