Program areas at Island Green Living Association
Resource depot - the resource depot is the only thrift store on st. john. We accept donations from the local community and tourists who might have otherwise trash their unwanted items, sending them to the overburdened landfill. These items are instead given a new lease on life and sold back to the community at a discounted rate. Our goal is to retrain the way the community views "trash", insteadseeing it as a valuable resource that should be reused and conserved. To date, the resource depot has kept more than one million lbs of material from entering the landfill.
Food security initiatives - Island Green is deeply committed to increasing foodsecurity and soverignty in the usvi and encouraging agricultural education. In addition to supporting the establishment of an aquaponics program at gifft hill school on st. john, Island Green is working in collaboration with the virgin islands department of education and the department of agriculture on the launch of "seeds of security," a program of planet Green force to enhance k-12 agricultural education. We served on the vi agricultural plan task force, and now the local food & farm council, charged with executing the agricultural plan, as well as the virgin islands conservation district. Additionally, we participate in the ag fair and organize farm council town halls and events.
Aluminum can crushing & ocean bound plastic recycling- Island Green Living operates st. john's only aluminum and ocean-bound plastic recycling programs. The aluminum recycling program has collected and recycled nearly 3.7+ million cans since inception. Approximately 100,000 lbs of certified ocean-bound #1,2 and 5 plastics have been reclaimed since partnership with padnos, a top us recycling company in 2022. In addition to drop-offs of recyclables by the community at the resource depot, collaboration with vi waste management authority allows Island Green to collect the material at specially marked bins at popular trash sites throughout the Island. Items are then processed by Island Green and shipped to padnos.
