Program areas at Island Green Living Association
Resource depot - the resource depot is the only thrift store on st. john. We accept donations from local residents who might have otherwise taken their unwanted items to the landfill. These items are then sold back to the community at a discounted rate. Our mission is to re-train the way the community looks at "trash" as instead valuable resources that need to be reused and conserved. To date, the resource depot has kept more than 500,000 lbs from entering the landfill on st. john.
Mulch chipping program -Island Green was awarded a grant based on a proposal that would increase hurricane resiliency on the Island. After irma and maria the vegetative debris was a huge bottle neck in recovery and the mulch chipping program on the Island provides material faster. Vegetative debris that is normally landfilled is now chipped into a mulch material that will be available to the community for their gardens/farms/landscaping needs. An additional grant has been awarded to continue the operations through 2021.
Aluminum can crushing & ocean bound plastic recycling- Island Green Living operates st. john's only aluminum and ocean-bound plastic recycling programs. The aluminum recycling program has collected and recycled nearly 2.5 millioin cans since inception. Approximately 35,000 lbs of certified ocean-bound #1,2 and 5 plastics have been reclaimed since partnership with padnos, a top us recycling company, and the launch of the plastics recycling program in february, 2022. In addition to drop-offs of recyclables by the community at the resource depot, collaboration with vi waste management authority allowed specially marked recycling receptacles to be stationed at popular trash collection sitesaround the Island starting in may, 2022 and Island Green collects the material with their dedicated truck. Materials are then sorted, crushed, bailed and shipped to padnos where they find a new lease on life. Moreover, 16 local restaurants have become recycling business partners by signing on to have their recyclable "waste" collected by Island Green through a paid program.
