Research and publicationisland Press publishes and promotes science-based solutions that help people make a positive difference for the environment. In 2023, Island Press published 19 new titles, sold 91,949 units, and distributed 5,056 free copies. Among these were:"inclusive transportation: a manifesto for repairing divided communities" (july 2023), by veronica o. davis. This book shines a light on the inequitable and often destructive practice oftransportation planning and engineering. Davis calls for new thinking and more diverse leadership to create transportation networks that connect people to jobs, education, opportunities, and to each other. The book was our best seller in 2023 and was excerpted 33 times by publications like planetizen and yahoo finance. "what a bee knows: exploring the thoughts, memories, and personalities of bees" (march 2023), by stephen buchmann. The author invites us to follow bees' mysterious paths and experience their alien world, exploring a bee's way of seeing the world and introducing the scientists who make the journey possible. This lively journey into a bee's mind reminds us that the world is more complex than our senses can tell us. The book was our second-best seller of 2023, and the author was interviewed about the book by publications such as psychology today and the guardian. "the jewel box: how moths illuminate nature's hidden rules" (may 2023), by tim blackburn. For ecologist tim blackburn, a moth trap is a captivating window into the world beyond the roof terrace of his london flat. In the jewel box, blackburn reveals how moths reflect hidden patterns governing the world around us. Through the lives of these overlooked insects, blackburn introduces a landscape of unseen ecological connections. A review in publisher's weekly called the book a "meditative take on what moths reveal and noted that "blackburn succeeds in drawing broad ecological lessons from the world of moths. ""thing: inside the struggle for animal personhood"(june 2023), by sam machado, cynthia sousa machado, and steven m. wise. In thing, comic artists sam machado and cynthia sousa machado bring together lawyer steven m. wise's groundbreaking work and their powerful illustrations in the first graphic nonfiction book about the animal personhood movement. Beginning with happy the elephant's story of confinement at the bronx zoo and the central ideas behind animal rights, thing then turns to the scientists that are revolutionizing our understanding of the minds of nonhuman animals such as great apes, elephants, dolphins, and whales. As we learn more about these creatures' inner lives and autonomy, the need for the greater protections provided by legal rights becomes ever more urgent. Thing was reviewed by the new york times, reaching a potential audience of over 140 million readers. "a new war on cancer: the unlikely heroes revolutionizing prevention" (may 2023), by kristina marusic. In this revelatory inquiry into cancer prevention, marusic meets remarkable doctors, scientists, and advocates who are upending our understanding of cancer and how to fight it. They recognize that we will never reduce cancer rates without ridding our lives of the chemicals that increasingly trigger this deadly disease. Marusic shows that, collectively, we have the power to prevent many cases and the war on cancer is winnable. We earned 66 media placements for the book, including an interview with the author on webmd that potentially reached over 64 million readers.
Program services/technical assistancethrough our urban resilience project (urp), Island Press improves the communications capacity of emerging leaders and educate practitioners on the latest environmental thinking and solutions, increasing their capacity to implement change. We work closely with movement leaders and emerging thinkers to help them tell their story through articles, blog posts, op-eds, and place them in media outlets to share environmental lessons widely. We provide editorial and marketing support to put these voices into the national conversation. As a result, we published 62 original pieces in 2023, which garnered 461 million potential views and over $5 million in ave (advertising value equivalency). Our pieces generated 2,500+ engagements on social media. Forty percent of our published articles and op-eds featured at least one author of color. We placed this content in high-profile mainstream media (including new york times and us news & world report) and in dozens of publications that target specific professional audiences (the hill, next city, and american city and county). Through our partnerships program, Island Press hosted or co-hosted 34 educational webinars in 2023 that attracted more than 7,000 participants. We produced ten webinars with inclusive transportation author veronica o. davis alone in 2023. Our partnership with the smart growth network (sgn) has continued to prosper. In all, the sgn webinar series hosted 117 programs between 2017 and 2024, attracting more than 130,000 registrants, 80,000 participants at the live programs, and almost 50,000 views of the recorded programs on youtube. The majority of the audience was brought in between 2020 and 2022. In 2022, nearly half of the network's programs were produced with Island Press. Six of sgn's top 10 most popular youtube videos are from Island Press. Ultimately, Island Press strengthens the environmental movement by giving professionals and advocates actionable information for creating a healthier, more sustainable world.
