Program areas at JMM
Education and outreach: the jmm provides services to students and teachers annually through on-site and off-site activities and professional development symposia. In addition, we provide tours of our historic synagogues and exhibitions for adult groups and walk-in visitors and public programs on a wide range of topics for audiences of all backgrounds. We also offer outreach services through our website, searchable digital collection, traveling exhibitions, and living history performances.
Historic preservation - the jmm preserves two national register synagogues (lloyd street synagogue, 1845, and chizuk amuno synagogue, 1876) and the largest collection of regional Jewish americana in the us. Collections include more than 12,877 objects and works of art, 72,580 catalogued photographs, 1,545 linear feet of archives and manuscripts, and 850 oral histories.
Exhibitions: the jmm maintains three exhibition galleries. Two currently hold long-term exhibitions that interpret core Museum themes. "the synagogue speaks!" - located in the lower level of the lloyd street synagogue tells the story of the three different immigrant congregations that worshipped within the building and how they each adapted the building to meet their congregational needs. "voices of lombard street - a century of change in east baltimore" explores the history of the neighborhood where the Museum is located. A third gallery features changing exhibitions that interpret themes drawn from american Jewish history.
