The John and Susan Horseman Foundation for American artmission and state of the collectionintroductionthe John and Susan Horseman Foundation for American Art (the "Foundation") wasformed by John and Susan Horseman to promote the knowledge and enjoyment of American Art. The Foundation's Art collection remains active in the local and regional arts community by undergoing constant development and research, participating in larger Art historical dialogues by contributing to various museum and gallery exhibitions, and welcoming scholarly study and public exhibits.
Missionfounded in 2012, the John and Susan Horseman Foundation for American Art is a non-profit 501(c)(3) committed to advancing interest in and appreciation of the Art of the united states. The Horseman Foundation firmly believes that an American Art history without the contributions of women and bipoc artists is not just incomplete, but incomprehensible. Since its inception, it has championed works produced by artists working outside the narrow parameters of the Art historical canon due to their race, gender, or geographic locale. Through its always Art initiative, the Foundation facilitates access to, lends, and donates works of Art; organizes and sponsors exhibitions; and provides financial support for artists, scholars, and institutions seeking to expand the dialogue of 20th and 21st century American Art.
History of the Foundation collectionthe Foundation was formed in 2012 by John and Susan Horseman in part through their donation of thirty-six paintings from their personal Art collection. As of october 2014, thefoundation contains thirty active accessions. Significantly, the Foundation's collection grew from a focus on the many American artists working concurrently to yet separately from the new york school abstract expressionists. The holdings of the Foundation's collection focus on the arts of the united states from 1910-1950, demonstrating the broad range of artistic responses to the sweeping social, political, and cultural transformations of the era. The Foundation collection has thus provided a clear picture of the notable yet often overlooked American elsewhere, filling a larger scholarly need for continued appreciation of twentieth-century American modernisms.
