Program areas at John Muir Health

Hospital services general medicine and surgerythe core of John Muir Health's service to the community is in its general medicine and surgery program, which provides comprehensive care from emergency to high level critical care to discharge support and home Health patients with a variety of conditions. John Muir medical center, walnut creek serves as the only county-designated trauma center for the area, working closely with local emergency services leaders. The John Muir Health trauma center received the american college of surgeon's committee on trauma unconditional re-verification as a level ii trauma center. National and state recognitions received in 2022 include: (1) recognition of John Muir Health (jmh), walnut creek medical center by u.s. news & world report for the 16th year in a row as one of "america's best hospitals". Diabetes & endocrinology, obstetrics & gynecology, orthopedics, and pulmonology & lung surgery services at the walnut creek medical center were recognized as among the top 50 in the united states, (2) recognition by u.s. news & world report of nine specialties combined and 27 adult procedures and conditions combined as high performing at John Muir Health's walnut creek and concord medical centers, (3) u.s. news and world report also ranked the walnut creek medical center #2 and concord medical center #3 out of nearly 50 hospitals in the san francisco metro area based on patient survival, patient safety, and care-related factors such as nursing and patient services, and reputation. The two hospitals were also ranked #10 and #17 in California out of more than 400 acute care hospitals, (4) John Muir Health's concord and walnut creek medical centers also earned the designation of best regional hospitals by u.s. news & world report - two of just 493 hospitals ( 11% of the hospital evaluated) to achieve this designation nationwide, (5) the walnut creek medical center was named one of america's 100 best hospitals for pulmonary care by healthgrades and received a clinical excellence award for joint replacement, as well as the outstanding patient experience award, (6) the concord medical center was recognized by healthgrades as one of america's top 50 hospitals for cardiac surgery for the fourth straight year and among the top 5 hospitals for cardiac surgery in California. The concord medical center also received a clinical excellence award for joint replacement, (7) combined, the two medical centers had seven five-star ratings from healthgrades for services, procedures and treatments, (8) newsweek ranked the walnut creek and concord medical centers as two of the best in the u.s. (#136 and #169) (9) the walnut creek medical center received an "a" safety grade from leapfrog in spring 2022. The concord medical center received a "b" safety grade from leapfrog in spring 2022. (10) both medical centers are magnet recognized for nursing excellence and quality patient outcomes. Our program emphasis in 2022 continued to be on serving uninsured, underserved, and vulnerable populations in our service area through community partnerships, such as the dental collaborative of contra costa county, mobile Health clinic, and support for nonprofit organizations providing access to healthcare, mental Health services, food, housing and violence prevention.
Womens and children's services is the third largest program within John Muir Health. The pediatric intensive care unit at the walnut creek medical center is certified by the California children's services. Accomplishments in 2022 include:the John Muir Health, walnut creek medical center pediatric department received a letter of recognition for our hospital's efforts in the sip (simultaneously implementing pathways for improving asthma, pneumonia and bronchiolitis care for hospitalized children) study, focused on improving care and outcomes for children hospitalized with respiratory illnesses. The current national surge in these illnesses underscores the importance of equipping frontline clinicians with the latest evidence based and cutting-edge tools to ensure every child receives excellent care. In the letter, yeelen edwards, msc and sunitha kaiser, md, msc from the university of California, san francisco commented the physician site lead, dr. yungting liao is deeply committed to implementing these tools.the nicu is working on the cpqcc neobrain collaborative and introducing the sense program to our nursing staff and families. The supporting and enhancing nicu sensory experiences (sense) program was developed to promote consistent, age-appropriate, responsive, and evidence-based positive sensory exposures for the preterm infant every day of nicu hospitalization. The goal is with these positive exposure that can have positive effects on neurodevelopmental outcomes.after a successful babies with books read a thon held in the nicu, additional books have been purchased to continue the program by encouraging reading sessions (both parents and staff) while the infant is inpatient and providing families with books to take home.the pediatric hospitalists participated in the national qi collaborative run by vip network/aap revise ii reducing excessive variability in infant sepsis evaluations. There were four primary measures: 1. Appropriate csf, 2. Appropriate disposition from the emergency department, 3. Appropriate receipt of antibiotics and 4. Appropriate discharge from the hospital. Based on this collaboration the following interventions were implemented: 1. Issued new/updated clinical practice guidelines based on three different age categories, 2. Created dot phrases for shared decision-making discussion and documentation, 3. Published guidelines in epic/agile md and 4. Provided stakeholder education hospitalists/er/residents/pcp.the pediatric hospitalists are working to facilitate early discharge of mom-baby dyads in the jmh birth center. The goal is to have the md discharge order before noon for the newborn discharge and noon for the ob discharge. The rn would then discharge the dyad within two hours of the last md order. In 2022 the neonatal and pediatric critical care transport team provided transport services in and out of John Muir Health to 442 patients.
Cardiovascular is the second largest hospital-based service of John Muir Health. Cardiovascular achievements in 2022 includes: for the fifth year in a row, concord medical center was named by healthgrades as "one of america's top 50 hospitals for cardiac surgery". Jmh's cardiac surgery program was also recognized among the top 5 in the state of California by healthgrades. Healthgrades' cardiac surgery specialty award recognizes hospitals with superior clinical outcomes in heart bypass surgery and heart valve surgery. This distinction represents the top 1% of hospitals in the united states. Healthgrades america's best hospitals is based solely on clinical quality outcomes and rewards hospitals that consistently exhibit exceptional, comprehensive quality care.john Muir Health's cardiac surgery program was recognized by the society of thoracic surgeons as "better than expected" for coronary bypass graft surgery and mitral valve repair + cabg outcomes. Approximately 12-15% of hospitals receive this "3-star" rating from sts, which denotes the highest category of quality.concord medical center was rated as high-performing by u.s. news & world report in 2022 in aortic valve surgery, heart attack, heart bypass surgery, heart failure, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (tavr). Walnut creek medical center was rated as high-performing by u.s. news & world report in 2022 in heart attack and heart failure. Both concord and walnut creek received the american heart association's get with the guidelines - gold plus heart failure quality achievement award for their commitment to managing heart failure in patients. Gold plus is the highest achievement level.john Muir concord received the mission: lifeline stemi receiving center gold plus achievement award and John Muir walnut creek was the recipient of the mission: lifeline stemi receiving center gold achievement award. These awards recognize hospitals for implementing specific quality improvement measures to treat patients who suffer severe heart attacks. Concord medical center was recognized as a blue distinction center for cardiac care. Blue distinction centers are recognized for distinguished clinical care and processes by the blue cross and blue shield association. Facilities earn these designations based on rigorous, evidence-based, objective criteria and input from expert physicians and medical organizations. Studies indicate blue distinction centers have better overall outcomes and lower costs for certain procedures when compared to non-designated medical facilities.
