Program areas at Juice Orange Mound
In response to inclement weather directly impacting our local homeless community, JOM opened its doors to serve the unhoused. What started off as a temporary plan to operate as a 3-week warming center morphed into a newfound commitment to serve the most vulnerable residents through direct sheltering. For 11 months and 13 days, JOM serves as the homeless shelter of Orange Mound, affectionately calling the operation the HubOM. As a phase 2 project, containers were purchased to begin building out a pocket community to serve the homeless in greater capacity by providing local transitional housing.
Monthly community meetings are held every 3rd Monday. Due to the pandemic, meetings are held virtually via Zoom. Canvassers were hired to help promote a text platform to encourage current residents to attend monthly meetings. Guest speakers are invited and zone updates continue to be shared during these routine gatherings.
JUICE Orange Mound is committed to serving unsupported entrepreneurs in Historic Orange Mound. Being such, we kickstarted a new effort called the Single Mom Entrepreneur Pilot Program (SMEP) which narrowed a cohort from over 200 interested mom entrepreneurs to 26 women. Ultimately 12 accepted the invitation to participate with 9 women graduating successfully from the pilot program. All graduates were provided access to a mentor, a stipend, and participation in a pitch competition.
Our organization host a myriad of events and programming in partnership with other organizations. For these events, our organization covers the costs of food, transportation, outreach, and any venue costs. All events occur within the boundary of Historic Orange Mound.
