Program areas at Kala Art Institute
Artist-in-Residence Program: Kala Institute offers an Artist-in-Residence program for artists working in various printmaking techniques, photo-processes, book arts and digital media including video production. Artist residency applications are accepted online three times per year. Considerations for acceptance are conceptual creativity and technical knowledge. Resident artists receive year-round 24-hour access to Kala's facilities and participation in a vital, international artistic community. Fellowships: For over 35 years, Kala Institute has annually awarded artists time, space, and financial support for their work through the Kala Fellowship award. The Kala Fellowship award is an artist residency program accepting applications from artists from the U.S. and around the world. Special initiates include parent artists, public art, media arts, programs for veterans, and more.
Exhibitions and Public Programs: Through the Kala Art Gallery, Kala Institute not only exhibits and promotes the artists who participate in lectures and discussions pertaining to the arts, and exhibits and sells the work of internationally recognized artists. The gallery is also used to host panel discussions, artist talks, and performances by visual, sound and performance artists. This includes off-site curatorial work in downtown Berkeley, Milvia Windows. Through its Arts Sales and Consulting Program, Kala Institute markets and supports exceptional local, national and international artists. Kala Institutes experienced staff works with customers to assist them in the selection of art and works to place in private, corporate, municipal and museum collections.
Education & Community, Exhibitions and Public Programs: Kala's education programs include over 100 art classes and workshops each year for adults and youth. Youth art education programs include Artists-In-Schools, summer art camp, after school and teen art studio, field trips for local public schools. Additional programs include exhibitions and public programs including artist talks, film screenings, panel discussions, and performances. Through the Kala Art Gallery, Kala Institute not only exhibits and promotes the artists who participate in its artist residency and also offers free and accessible educational programs for the community.
