Program areas at Kansas Humane Society of Wichita
Shelter program:the Kansas Humane Society is a non-profit animal welfare organization providing shelter and care for homeless animals, pet adoption services, donor-subsidized spay/neuter services for the pets of low income families, youth education, community outreach, volunteer opportunities and end of life services such as private pet cremation. In fiscal year 2023, khs provided services for 12,703 animals. of those animals, 2,569 were surrendered by their owners who were no longer able to care for them, and 7,075 were stray animals transferred for adoption from Wichita animal services, the Kansas Humane Society's municipal partner at the murfin animal care campus.of the 12,703 animals served by khs, 10,037 were homeless animals needing shelter and 4,531 visited khs for ancillary services such as spay/neuter or end of life services.of the 12,703 animals needed shelter services, 10,034 were saved through adoption, transfer to regional adoption partners or returned to their owner. In fiscal year 2023, khs' live release rate for canines was 95%; for felines 98%; and overall 97%. Due to health, behavior or lack of organization resources, 300 animals were euthanized.
Community and educational services:youth education is a key building block to reaching out vision and reducing our community's distressing pet overpopulation. In fiscal year 2023 khs reached over 468 children to teach invaluable lessons of compassion and respect for other living things. Khs helped 2,310 grieving families memorialize their pet through private pet cremation in fiscal year 2023. Nearly 1,188 volunteers helped fulfill the mission of khs, providing care, support, enrichment, socialization, compassion and love to its temporary residents. More than 272 volunteer foster families provided specialized care for 1,795 ill or underage pets in fiscal year 2023.
Veterinary medical center services:the khs veterinary medical center provides high- quality medical care to shelter animals including examination, evaluation, vaccination, and spay/neuter surgery prior to adoption. Khs conducted 1,762 surgeries in fiscal year 2023. The spay/neuter surgery program is designed for low income pet owners. Every dog and cat adopted from khs is spayed/neutered and microchipped prior to adoption ultimately decreasing the number of animals entering our facility in the future.
