Kentucky Hunters for the Hungry processes approximately 2,316 deer donated by hunters to feed the hungry and malnourished in Kentucky. As a 501(c)(3) charitable organization managed by volunteers, KHFH is dedicated to feeding the needy throughout the state. In addition to their primary mission, they also have a venison meat stick program that supports school systems and disaster relief efforts. When a devastating flood swept through fourteen counties in eastern Kentucky in July 2022, KHFH was quick to act.

Program areas at Kentucky Hunters for the Hungry

Our key accomplishments in 2023 towards our mission can best be described in two areas. The first and primary means is by the distribution of ground venison through food pantries located around our Commonwealth. In 2023, KHFH processed 3,023 deer (an increase of 31% over prior year), generating over 116,000 pounds of ground venison and providing an estimated 467,000 servings of protein. In total, over 90 different shelters and food pantries received donations from KHFH in 2023.
The second area in which we support our primary mission is our Venison Meat Stick Program, with an initial launch in 2022. Many school systems throughout our Commonwealth recognize that not all children are receiving the nutrition needed, and programs are in place to feed those students during the school week. To supplement this effort, other organizations have developed to provide students with backpacks or bags of food, at the end of each week, to assist children through the weekends. Providing protein over the weekend was a challenge, so KHFH was approached and asked if we could assist. In 2022, KHFH developed our Venison Meat Stick, a prepared package of venison comprised of two meat sticks per package. Much like the meat sticks you find in you area groceries or convenient stores, these meat sticks are ready-to-eat when you open the package. During our initial year of 2022 we distributed 45,000 packages to multiple school systems throughout our Commonwealth. For 2023 that number increased to 59,256 units.
