Program areas at Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation
Kslof revitalized its bahamas awareness of mangroves (b.a.m.) Program in abaco after a three-year hiatus, while the jamaica awareness of mangroves in nature (j.a.m.i.n.) Program continued to thrive. Graduate student saskia schmle's research demonstrated j.a.m.i.n. 's effectiveness, showing that students gained and retained critical knowledge about mangroves. Kslof also advanced ocean literacy by continuing its collaboration with the university of miami (um) on the broader impacts curriculum under an nsf grant and launching the virtual reef expedition vr application with support from um's umverse. Additionally, kslof released the first installment in the "reefs at risk activity and coloring book" series, focused on coral bleaching, with generous support from the jerome s. & grace h. murray Foundation, and transferred the mangrove detectives website to its platform, expanding access to these resources.
In 2023, the kslof focused on advancing ocean health through strategic communications and outreach, working across borders and scientific disciplines to inform, engage, and inspire action. As part of this effort, we attended a number of high-profile international conferences, including cop28 and the third foundations dialogue meeting, sharing our knowledge and engaging the international conservation community to tackle some of the most significant issues threatening coral reefs worldwide. We also forged new partnerships with like-minded institutions and informed the creation of an innovation hub to bridge the gap between scientific research and the people it ultimately serves.
Kslof continued its collaboration with the pacific blue Foundation in 2023 to advance the automation of coral transect photo analysis. The science team made two trips to fiji during the year to participate in fieldwork and engage with south pacific community leaders to enhance conservation efforts. Nasa remained actively involved in utilizing the global reef expedition datasets for reef mapping, while partners at the university of miami focused on modeling spectral diversity relationships with ecosystem metrics. Kslof also sought to explore new strategic partnerships with organizations such as the un ocean decade, foundations dialogue, great barrier reef Foundation, and the prince albert ii of monaco Foundation. The science department contributed to the global coral reef monitoring report in collaboration with the international coral reef initiative. At the close of 2023, a kslof scientist represented the Foundation at cop28, speaking on the critical issues facing coral reefs.
