Program areas at Koihonua
Huli Program: a program focused on social justice and supporting uplifting and empowering Hawaiian community by providing organizing and action training and response to community needs. Supported a Hawaiian cultural organization impacted by the Lahaina fire in expanding a community resource hub and building capacity by providing a base for a cultural monitoring team involved in the cleanup as part of our social justice work.
Other Programs: Kupaaikee carving revitalization program. Our apprentice carvers participated in carving large scale kii akua carvings for a major series production in collaboration with Maori carvers in preparation for large scale site restorations in Hawaii. We spent the year preparing to host over 70 carvers from across Oceania for the 2024 Festival of the Pacific. Supported and Incubated a land trust organization to support the return of lands to Native Hawaiians and Native Hawaiian organizations to support and perpetuate Hawaiian culture and address health and wellbeing.
Hanakehau is a 4 acre land restoration site and homebase for our operations. We are actively removing and controlling invasive species planting native cultural use and food plants. This past year we expanded apiary to over 30 colonies managed by college student interns and hosted hives and a class operated out of the local university.
