In FY22, Kvie engaged with the community through virtual events and slowly returned to some in-person events in connection with the premiere of Ken Burns' new documentary on Benjamin Franklin.

Broadcasting from California's capital, pbs Kvie is a valuable part of the 16-county sacramento-stockton-modesto television market. The service also extends to another 12 counties outside the dma, serving viewers in 28 of the state's 58 counties. Pbs Kvie provides educational programming and services through television, online content, and live engagement screenings and events. As a pbs station, pbs Kvie's national and local productions work together to engage the mind and spirit to promote personal and community growth. As the only locally owned and managed television station in the 20th largest television market in the united states, pbs Kvie reflects the community back to itself by creating and presenting programs about its past, present and future, providing a springboard for engagement, discussion and life-long learning.pbs Kvie expanded its productions to include more key local services, including new local programs in the areas of arts, education, environment, local history, health, civic issues, and regional lifestyle. Through new and engaging content, pbs Kvie's online audiences grew on kvie.org, kviekids.org, and through new social media outlets. Pbs Kvie also continued to work on strengthening its financial position. Pbs Kvie continued education to serve families through educational, commercial-free children's programming.pbs Kvie's local services deeply impacted the greater sacramento region. The youngest viewers learned their abc's and 123's through the station's on-air programming for preschoolers and free online and on-demand children's content. Recently transplanted residents learned the rich history of their new community through pbs Kvie programming, both on-air and online. And longtime residents explored more in-depth issues that impact everyone.key local services in fy2023 included more than (50) new programs and segments featuring our region's arts, celebrating local attractions, California agriculture, and delving into pressing regional issues like education and the environment, history, health and more. Pbs Kvie's locally produced and longest running original program "america's heartland" continues to air on pbs stations and various other channels across the country and around the world. Other pbs Kvie productions include the "viewfinder" series, "rob on the road", "Kvie arts showcase", "inside California education", and "studio sacramento," all highlighting the people, places, and issues of our region. National public television favorites like "masterpiece", "nova", "great performances", "nature and "frontline" delivered an array of ideas and adventures to our citizens, all for free.in fy23, we produced 18 studio sacramento episodes that featured leaders and organizations in our communities. Some of the conversations covered issues and topics about new approaches to building housing and community, the state of the economy, the youth mental health crisis, the rise in antisemitism, the importance of exploring genealogy, the american river parkway foundation, meaningful communication strategies, the importance of childhood literacy, the black panther party's legacy, sacramento hosting the homeless world cup, 60 years of the sacramento observer, transgender in america, sacramento state's new president dr. luke wood, and the state of regional community banks.kvie arts showcase profiled local artist, francis brown who uses her art as a personal expression of her truth and legacy. Throughout her life, many obstacles delayed but did not divert her from her path. Those challenges expanded her understanding of her own possibilities and her art.rob on the road began its 13th consecutive season in fy23 and remains a primary vehicle for regional story telling. Rob on the road provides thoughtful stories that spotlight the people and places of northern California, making our region a place for all people to live and thrive.from rob on the road to rob at home and region rising, this solid brand continues to grow its presence both on-air and online since premiering in 2009. Rob on the road produced nine new half-hour episodes in fy23, as well as 17 segments for broadcast and online. One of those programs took viewers back on the road with an all-new rob on the road episode exploring the hidden story of monticello at the winters museum; an excursion through rural yolo county on river fox trains & railbikes; and the success story of smash sacramento, whose owners turned tragedies into triumph creating a safe space to release stress and have fun. Eight half-hours focused on changemakers and innovators in our community as part of our ongoing funded rob on the road: region rising initiative. Highlights included tommy stewart, a soccer champion with the sacramento republic fc who shared his story of mental health, grief, loss and the power of music; henry li, the visionary leader of sacramento regional transit, who is leading the task of overhauling regional transit to meet growing needs and drawing national attention for his efforts; richard rodriguez, one of america's most acclaimed essayists, whose writings began in sacramento as a child barely speaking english and who became a peabody award-winning journalist; and kevin mcallister, meals on wheels director of sacramento, an organization feeding thousands of seniors in need of more than just a meal.our original "viewfinder" series offered viewers 8 new episodes either produced by pbs Kvie or acquired from talented local producers. Many explored health, history, and nature and the environment. Highlights included an in-depth look at the diverse hearing-impaired community, their efforts to thrive, and new breakthroughs in treatment; growing research and use of psychedelics in treatment for mental health challenges like depression and ptsd; and how scientists are finding new ways that stem cells can treat chronic illnesses. Other programs explored how a sacramento-area city, rancho cordova, grew from a small gold rush town into a major research and manufacturing center for space exploration; how the first truly disabled-access hiling trail is coming back after being destroyed by fire; and how america's great lincoln highway become one of the first freeway arteries linking the u.s. Outdoor enthusiasts also enjoyed two hiking episodes that explored backcountry yosemite and joshua tree national parks.in fy23, we continued production on the fifth season of inside California education, a statewide series of half-hour episodes focusing on the state's public education system. Production had been delayed by covid-related school closures and other Kvie projects, but we were able to resume capturing new stories later in the fiscal year. New episodes will begin airing on Kvie and other California pbs stations in fy2024. Episodes include both k-12 education and many of California's community colleges. The series continues to be well-received by other California stations and by general viewers and stakeholders in California education.in fy23, pbs Kvie and close to 90% of all pbs stations continued to air episodes of america's heartland. Since its launch in 2005, episodes have aired more than 400,000 times throughout the u.s. a major grant was awarded by the California department of food and agriculture, which allowed us to undertake production on ten new episodes. A second cdfa grant has enabled us to commence field production on an additional ten episodes for another season. Both seasons' episodes focus primarily on California specialty crops, many of which are grown around the northern California region served by Kvie. Funding was also received by sustainable agriculture and research and rural development partners which allowed us to cteate two additional half-hour episodes.finally, as part of our expanded strategy to reach viewers on a variety of platforms, in fy23 we produced an arts "short" (segment). The arts story funded by the city of sacramento's arts & culture division focused on diverse artists in our region.
Pbs Kvie engaged our community through several in-person screenings and events in fy23.in connection with the premiere of the new documentary "fanny: the right to rock," Kvie partnered with the center for asian american media to present a screening party and performance on may 22, 2023. Held at the crest theatre, the free event also featured a performance by the band fanny, which was formed in sacramento in the 1960s.in addition, a screening party was held at the crest theatre to celebrate the return of "all creatures great and small on masterpiece" with a preview screening of the first episode of season three on december 14, 2022. The evening featured trivia and photos of guests' pets on the big screen before the screening.we also welcomed nick sheedy, the lead genealogist for the hit pbs show "finding your roots," for a special event on february 23, 2023. Guests got to hear behind-the-scenes stories from the series as well as tips for their own genealogical research.
As an educational broadcaster, pbs Kvie is known for its pbs kids offerings like "sesame street and "daniel tiger's neighborhood," presenting 9,315 hours of educational children's programming across our main high-definition channel and our 24-hour pbs kids channel in fy23.every day, children across our region of California embark on amazing adventures and make new discoveries through pbs kids programs on pbs Kvie. The new series "rosie's rules" premiered on october 3, 2022. The series follows the adventues of rosie fuentes, an inquisitive and hilarious 5-year-old girl just starting to learn about the amazing world beyond her family walls. And she is ready to learn it all by figuring it out herself. The new series "work it out wombats!" Premiered on february 6, 2023. The series follows a playful trio of marsupial siblings who live with their grandmother in a fantasical treehouse apartment complex called the treeborhood. The residents of the treeborhood bring varied skills, abilities, traditions, assorted ways of thinking, and different family structures to this diverse and vibrant community of neighbors.
