Description
La Plata County Historical Society aims to keep the history and culture of La Plata alive. It actively owns the only museum dedicated to the entire county, telling stories from native peoples, European, Hispanic, and American immigrants, and through the development of indigenous and new economies. The society promotes public awareness through the Animas Museum by offering exhibits, educational programs, and advocacy. In 2022 alone, 2,837 visitors were welcomed.

Program areas at La Plata County Historical Society

The Society owns the only museum dedicated to the history of the entire County by telling the stories of native peoples, european, hispanic and american immigrants, the development of indigenous and new economies, the evolution of the County and other important aspects of this region in the rocky mountains. The Society collaborates with local and regional museums, sharing resources, research data, staff expertise, and volunteer support. The museum provides a meeting space for organizations that share an interest in history and specially tailored programs for groups interested in learning more about local history as well as extensive educational opportunities for children. The museum, listed on the durango register of historic places in 1991, welcomes over 5,000 vistiors per year. The website "www.animasmuseum.org" receives more than 9,000 hits per month, providing access to Historical resources as well as links to other Historical organizations and resources - a valuable and unique research tool. The Historical research materials available at the museum are available nowhere else. The Society's vast collection of historic images is available to researchers and the public.
