Program areas at Lake Union Rotary Foundation
Purchase of high quality water filtration systems to produce clean drinking water for 11 elementary schools in Adis Ababa Ethiopia. Members of Lake Union Rotary visited Ethiopia to verify systems onsite, selection of schools and start of associated hygiene training program.
Funds raised and submitted to the Rotary Foundation as seed money for the global Ethiopia grant to enable maximum match from the Rotary Foundation.
Matching grant for Marys Place, a local Seattle shelter for women and children. The funds were specifically designated for prevention of family homelessness.
Getting Underway Maritime Job Creation program. In conjunction with the Center for Wooden Boats, 10 at risk youths were provided with stipends and on-the-water experiences as well as job skills training to prepare for careers in the maritime industry. 5 young people obtained living wage jobs that did not require college. 5 students decided to continue their education to further improve their employment opportunities.
Emergency winter clothing was provided for the Orion YouthCare shelter in the Seattle Lake Union neighborhood. Volunteers spent time at the shelter to prepare meals and hand out winter clothing and sleeping bags.
Young Rotarian travel fund to explore Malaria related needs in African countries.
10 special Braille backpacks were provided to blind people in Nepal in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Lakewood.
At risk youths enjoyed an on the water experience sailing the historic schooner Adventuress on Puget Sound. Hands on instructions in sailing and navigation were provided
NW Seaport was supported in their restoration efforts of historical maritime vessels and provided internships for at risk youths on historical vessels.
Jazz Night School was supported in their education effort to teach music to more than 300 adults.
