Legal Aid Service of Northeastern Minnesota

Lasnem has five offices: duluth, pine city, brainerd, grand rapids and Virginia. Our firm services the northeast eleven counties in Minnesota, stretching from pine and kanabec counties, North to aitkin, part of cass, crow wing, itasca, and koochiching, and east to border of the state through carlton, st. louis, lake, and cook counties. Our full-time staff attorneys are focused on the greatest level of need with the highest level of systemic and community impact through full representation of clients. Our guiding priority principles are as follows: promoting family safety, stability, and well being; preservation or acquisition of shelter and related shelter needs; maintaining, enhancing, and protecting income and economic security; promoting dignity, security, and independence for the older adults. In 2023, the Legal Aid staff served 8,289 people in direct case Legal services. Legal services performed protected 369,441 in assets, and recovered 390,607 in assets for our clients. The pai(private attorney involvement) program opened 551 cases in 2023. Our attorneys regularly perform outreach and clinics to educate the public on their Legal rights, and we engaged with more than 2,697 individuals during this programming. In 2023, nearly 39% of our cases closed helped individuals with family law matters, and another 41% of our cases closed helped individuals with housing matters.
