Program areas at Literacy Volunteers of Santa Fe
Literacy Volunteers of Santa Fe (LVSF) has served the Santa Fe community for thirty-two years, providing literacy instruction for adults and their families. Literacy is essential to improving the quality of life of individuals, promoting economic growth, and building an informed, responsible citizenry in Santa Fe and elsewhere. Since 1985, over 4,480 trained tutors have provided over 478,978 hours of instruction to help more than 13,027 adults students obtain essential skills and reach their fullest potential. This represents volunteer contributions equivalent to over $10 million. Literacy Volunteers of Santa Fe has three principal programs: Basic Literacy: Between July 1, 2016 and June 30, 2017, 64 students received 1,528 hours of tutoring in writing and reading. Fifty-five tutors provided these services at multiple sites around Santa Fe County. English as a Second Language: Between July 1, 2016 and June 30, 2017, 348 students received a total of 12,481 hours of tutoring in reading, writing and speaking English. These services were provided by 138 tutors at 29 workplace and community sites. Citizenship Tutoring: Between July 1, 2016 and June 30, 2017, 63 students received 2,039 hours of tutoring to help pass their citizenship exams. Twenty-four tutors provided these services.Note about funding: In addition to the income specified in this report, Literacy Volunteers (LVSF) of Santa Fe receives funds from state and federal grants that come though the Adult Education Department of Santa Fe Community College. These funds provide salary and administrative support. For the fiscal year ending in June 2017, these funds exceeded $64,000. In addition, the Adult Education Department provides office space and computer and phone support.
