Program areas at Livable Hawaii Kai Hui
Nursery: New expansion master land plan provided to Kamehameha Schools. Lease renewal discussion on hold per landowner thus all community programs were shut down through May 2023. No new edible plantings nor growth of inventory of native plant. Firebreaks were maintained and community education two day gathering held in May. Continue to host are Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts and WCCC.
Ka Iwi: Received a reimbursable City and County of Honolulu Grants in Aid for $150K for Kaiwi mauka. Kaiwi Explorations 2023 hosted 185 residents on educated hikes about the cultural and natural significance of the area. This free community event runs for two days with support from partners The Trust for Public Land, Sierra Club Oahu Group, Maunalua.Net, Kamehameha Schools, State of Hawaii Dept. of Parks & Rec., Hui Nalu and Hawaii Trail and Mountain Club. Completed a flora and fauna report. Opened the lands to UH Manoa archeological professor and students to do field work. Kaiwi mauka trail maintenance and self-managed walk /hike pilot programs extended through the year to assist the public with outdoor opportunities.
Hawea & Keawawa Wetland: Renewed agreement with Chaminade University to manage the water quality assessment and use of the preserve as an outdoor classroom. Maintained the endangered wetland bird (Hawaiian Moorhen) count of 14 with 3 successful nesting seasons. Extended the self-managed volunteer program to increase community opportunity. Planted 20 new native seedlings. Applied for 3 grants.
