Program areas at Livable Hawaii Kai Hui
Project 1: Ohana (family) Gardens program continued free to Hawaiian urban families and several area residents (participates self-monitor access to grow edibles). Minimal renovation to key structures provided additional use areas. Continued the pilot products of eggs, ulu, bananas, limes, pomegranates and dragon fruit in anticipation of a new land lease and expanding. Completed a master land plan with Townscape LLC. Released 219 butterflies and expanded the pollinator garden. Hosted Troop 101 (boy scouts) for service projects Firebreaks maintained with support from WCCC volunteers.
Other programs, including commencement with seeking access through BWS property to Paiko Ridge. Protected over 300 acres through an acquisition process.
Project 2: Completed a Kaulunani Urban and Community Forestry grant (a program of the DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife; and State and Private Forestry, branch of the USDA Forest Service, Region 5). Renewed agreement with Chaminade University to manage the water quality assessment and use of the preserve as an outdoor classroom. Maintained the endangered wetland bird (Hawaiian Moorhen) count of 14 with 2 successful nesting seasons. Extended the self-managed volunteer program (included online tutorial and support) to increase community exposure and opportunity. Planted 25 new native seedlings.
