Program areas at Live By Living Foundation
On-Line Community: Live By Living continued to offer a variety of free on-line programming for friends of the Live By Living community. Programs include mindfulness, Pilates, and strength training. Several hundred people attended these classes in the past year.
Education/Outreach: Live by Living spent significant time re-building our connections with cancer treatment centers. Contacting over 100 nurses, social workers, nurse navigators and managers at dozens of different treatment centers. Treatment centers are the primary source of referrals for our various programs. We distributed over 5,000 brochures, appeared on a local daytime TV news and feature program, and were featured in a news story in two local daily papers, the Vail Daily and the Summit (County) Daily. We also hosted booths at a half-dozen cancer survivor-oriented events.
Retreats: Live by Living held 9 survivor-caregiver retreats in 2023, with 147 participants and volunteers. Overall, retreats were at 91% of available capacity, up 3% from last year, and close to pre-Covid levels. We held 4 retreats at the YMCA Conference Center in Estes Park, and 4 at the Tenth Mountain huts.
Day Trips/Cancer to 14K: Live by Living expanded the number of hike and walk programs we offer from three locations to 10. We now have regular walks and hikes in the following areas: Fort Collins, Boulder, Denver, Jefferson County, Colorado Springs, Grand Junction, Summit County, Durango, and a rotating program that ranges from Aurora to Kenosha Pass. We held over 130 hikes and walks with over 700 participants. We also held two tracks of Cancer to 14K, our 10-week hiking-based fitness program. The intermediate level track had a goal of hiking to Lake Isabelle (about 5 miles), and the advanced track goal was to summit Grays Peak. Eleven cancer survivors participated in the Lake Isabelle track. All of them completed at least half the hikes in the program. Seven completed at least 7 of the hikes, and 9 completed the final hike. Ten survivors participated in the Grays Peak track. Nine of them completed at least half the hikes, half completed at least 7 of the hikes, and 8 summited Grays Peak. In both cases, participation was generally better than prior years. Since 2018, we've put 30 survivors on top of Grays Peak, and another 30 have completed the final hike in the intermediate series.
