Longwood Gardens, Inc., located in kennett square, Pennsylvania, is the living legacy of pierre s. du pont, bringing joy and inspiration to everyone through the beauty of nature, conservation and learning. We envision a world where beauty is accessible to all. We are leaders and innovators in the art and science of horticulture. We present extraordinary experiences to bring pleasure, foster well-being, and spark imagination. We enrich society through learning and training programs, research, stewardship of the land, and community engagement.
In october 2018, Longwood cemetery llc was formed to assume ownership and operations of the cemetery which adjoins Longwood Gardens. Longwood Gardens is the sole member of Longwood cemetery llc. Chartered in 1855, the Longwood cemetery has long served as a place of peace and has helped tell the story of some of the brandywine valley's most revered, from war heroes to ardent abolitionists. The cemetery sits on land once granted by william penn, located directly in front of the 1854 historic Longwood meeting house and at the entrance to Longwood Gardens. Longwood Gardens is responsible for the operation, maintenance and up-keep of the cemetery.
Admission income accounts for 37% of operating income and 26% of total income without which our goal of providing a world-class horticultural display would be impossible to accomplish.
Continuing education courses are horticulturally related, thereby creating greater understanding and appreciation of Longwood's exempt purpose.
Longwood sponsors performances in its outdoor amphitheater, and in other garden locations, with the intention of adding to the Gardens visitation experience and cultivating a greater horticultural interest in those who attend.
Facility rentals attract new attendees and give them access to Longwood's displays and events.
The garden shop sells horticulturally inspired items, such as plants, seeds, and other items related to Longwood Gardens' mission.
Miscellaneous income includes refunds and reimbursements that offset expenses incurred during the normal course of business.
